Punta Gorda is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 120 miles southeast of Tampa, Florida. It was first settled by Indians in the early 18th century. The town of Punta Gorda began to develop in the late 19th century as a result of sugarcane production on the island. The town became an important port for goods and passengers travelling between Tampa and Jacksonville, Florida. In 1933, Punta Gorda was made a U.S. Naval Base under President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program designed to increase American military strength in the face of aggressive Spanish possessions in Latin America and Africa. The base continued to be an important force during World War II, providing storage and launching facilities for warships off the coast of Florida. Afterward, Punta Gorda declined as a commercial center due to its limited population size and infrastructure deficiencies; however, it remains an important residential community today with wide variety of shopping opportunities available both within and outside the city limits.

The first permanent English settlement in this area was on Hilton Head Island, which was established in 1565 by Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1754, a group of British colonists from North Carolina arrived at Punta Gorda to explore the maritime resources of the island. They soon discovered that there were more valuable resources offshore than on Hilton Head Island and began to develop the community into a trading post. By 1800, Punta Gorda had become one of the most important commercial centers in Southeast Asia. In 1821, American Revolutionary forces invaded Cuba and landed at Punta Gorda to help drive out Spanish forces. In 1825, after Spain ceded its remaining holdings in Cuba to America, Punta Gorda became part of what is now known as Miami-Dade County. during this time period many new buildings were constructed including Fort Hamilton (now called Historic Park) which served as a military fortification for coastal defenses against pirates and other threats. In 1898, during World War I, Puerto Rico seceded from America and formed its own government under nationalist leader José Félix Varela y Gómez. After years of effort by Americans and Puerto Rican nationalists to rejoin America through peaceful means, war broke out in 1916 when American troops attacked Puerto Rico without provocation from Mexico City. A bloody battle ensued that ended with over 100 dead Americans and hundreds wounded Puerto Ricans including some high-ranking officials such as Governor Rafael Rivera Velázquez who later died from his injuries at an American military hospital near Tampa Bay
