Riviera Beach, Florida is a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 6,807 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County. The area that now makes up Riviera Beach was originally called Marco Island. In 1821, Nicholas Longstreet and his brother John bought the island from its original owner, Pedro Fernandez de Tavares. They named it after their mother's birthplace in France - Riviere Saint-Jean-de-Luz (River Saint Jean). The Longstreets built a plantation on the island in 1827 and soon started to sell sugarcane to local plantations in South America and Europe. By 1830, they had harvested enough sugar to make them rich! However, by 1840 their fortunes were gone because of price fluctuations caused by global recession. In 1845 another family purchased the island from Nicholas Longstreet’s estate; this time they renamed it Riviera Beach after their home country – Italy – which they had visited while living in exile during the Napoleonic Wars years earlier. The new owners imported many Italianate features into their beachfront home including an impressive water tower and a large elliptical pool with two decks for swimming/diving/fishing etc., as well as a tennis court and Gymnasium (now used as a movie theater). Many high ranking U.S military personnel spent time at this seaside resort during World War II while stationed in or visiting Miami before returning home to fight again abroad when war ended.. Riviera Beach successfully lobbied for annexation by Miami Dade County in 1959 following passage of “The Great Riviera Parkway” project through then unincorporated areas making way for development along I-95 corridor northward until Palm Coast Boulevard southward into Miami proper… Overhead wires carrying power generated much heat during sunnier times which led to installation of airconditioning units throughout most of the visitors center buildings…. A shopping mall anchored by Sears opened adjacent to I-395 near Business Aviation Airport…. After Hurricane Andrew destroyed parts of Little Haiti less than one mile east of downtown Riviera Beach on October 25th 1992 residents began moving back into what remained but due largely to lack of housing availability withinMiami Dade County government decided not rezone land around community so much damage could be done rather rebuild some homes that have been lost over time given that few if any actually replaced from preAHA days….. Riviera Beach is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It is located on the shore of the Indian River Lagoon and has a population of about 15,000 people. The town was founded in 1922 by Italian fishermen and their families who moved from Key West. The name Riviera Beach comes from the Riva del Garda (riverside of the Garda), which flows through the town. The first post office at Riviera Beach was established in 1922, and the first store opened in 1925. In 1930, construction began on what became known as "The Strand" shopping center which included a movie theater, four restaurants/bars, two stores, and an ice cream parlor. In 1936, Riviera Beach became part of Miami-Dade County. In 1969 it was announced that then-Mayor Manuel Aripa would be running for re-election to an unprecedented seventh term as Mayor of Miami-Dade County despite being indicted for bribery charges at the time; he lost to his opponent Arturo Fraga by 14 votes out of over 22,000 cast ballots cast during that year's mayoral election cycle.
