Most people who lived here worked onshore jobs such as fishing or manufacturing products brought to market from abroad. There were also several small businesses that functioned primarily within the local economy including a grocery store, post office, gas station and barbershop- providing essential services for residents during this time period. In 1951, Riviera Beach became an incorporated municipality with its own government while still functioning as an unincorporated village within Monroe County. In 1967, after years of discussion and public hearings regarding annexation by Fort Myers proper - which did not occur due to political decisions made at that time - Riviera Beach became part ofFort Myers City Limits effective July 1st1967 with its current name reflecting its separation from Monroe County The economic development associated with this transition was significant; new businesses opened up including restaurants, shopping centers and medical offices which helped to create much needed economic stability for the city during difficult times throughout the 1990s both domestically and internationally . After being hit hard by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 - which left many homes damaged or destroyed - Ft Myers City Limits elected to re-brand itself as "Riviera Beach" effective January 1st2005 in order to promote tourism growth while reaffirming their commitment to support local businesses . It should be noted that despite having its own government - separate from Monroe County - Riviera Beach still functions democratically under Mayor Ruben Gomez's leadership as all governing bodies are accountable through specific committees charged with carrying out specificcity policies without interference from county management
Riviera Beach was founded on November 10, 1901 by the brothers Barron and Harry Riviera. The original name for the beach was "Baywater". When it became a state park in 1933, its name was changed to "Riviera Beach State Park".
