Riviera Beach, Florida is a town located in Broward County,Florida. The population was 12,713 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is included in the Miami-Dade statistical area. Riviera Beach was established by pioneers who arrived during the Seminole Wars. In 1838, Captain David Wilcox surveyed and named this spot Riviera Beach after his native land of Venice, Italy. The first post office in Riviera Beach opened in 1846. By 1915, it had grown to include a full town center with a hotel, grocery store, bank and several residences. The post office closed on October 15th of that year due to competition from other towns within Broward County which had received postal service two months earlier. However, business continued to grow until 1917 when World War I began and mail delivery was suspended because of wartime production demands. In 1929 the first organized swimming meet ever held in Riviera Beach took place at then-Marriott's Oceanfront Hotel on State Key West between Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale while also being televised live on NBC nationwide. That same year saw the opening of what would become one of South Florida’s most popular tourist attractions - The Jumeaux (later known as The Palm). This landmark structure served as both a resort casino/hotel and cultural center for many years before it burned down in 1966 amidst criticism over its unsanitary conditions both inside and outside - making it one of only a handful of U.S.-based casinos to go belly up during that era!
