The Riviera Beach Naval Ship Museum is a naval ship museum located in Riviera Beach, Florida. The museum preserves and displays U.S. Navy ships from the 18th century to the present day.The Riviera Beach Naval Ship Museum was founded in 1978 by Rear Admiral John Hargrave and Lieutenant Commander Robert L. Woodruff Jr.. The museum has a collection of over 80 warships from various navies around the world including 16 American destroyers, 10 British frigates, 5 Chilean submarines and 2 Italian destroyers dating back to the 1800s. The Riviera Beach Naval Ship Museum also contains an old ordnance depot that served as both a storage and research center for naval artillery during World War II. The United States Navy's USS Constitution class battleship was built at Barry Brothers Iron Works in Greensboro, North Carolina between 1853-1855. She was launched on December 12th, 1855 and commissioned into service on February 3rd, 1861 under Commodore James Farragut with the port of Charleston as her homeport. After serving in various campaigns throughout the Civil War she decommissioned on March 1st 1865 at Norfolk Virginia with distinction for her heroism in battle off Hampton Roads during coordinated Confederate attacks against Fort Sumter (April 14-May 9). She returned to active service under Captain Charles Walshe commanding when she sailed for Liverpool England on October 26th 1870 en route to New Orleans Louisiana where she arrived November 6th after tugging out of Baltimore Harbor twice that week alone! The Rivieras had originally come from Italy and were vacationers who decided to move down to Florida in 1919. In 1930, they sold all of their land except for one piece that still remains in town--the old post office building which now houses the Riviera Beach Legionnaires' Association. The Rivieras left behind a lasting legacy on Riviera Beach by making it an ultra-conservative place where people only permitted white women and men to walk on the beach at night. This prohibition led to many accidents as people trying to cross the sand got lost or ran into traffic. In 1965, when it was announced that President John F Kennedy would be visiting Brevard County, locals gathered around Flagler's Park and watched as he took his turn riding on a golf cart through the park before disembarking at Naval Station Canaveral just north of town. As part of preparations for his visit, local officials built a small stage next to Flagler's Park so that Kennedy could be entertained while he was there. One hundred years after they first settled in this area, residents are still proud of what they have done for their community and enjoy spending time at Riviera Beach every summer
