Rockledge is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The first humans to live in Rockledge arrived around AD 1000. They were Native American and used the now abandoned Ocala River as their primary water source. In 1845, Jacksonville built a road through what is now Rockledge and renamed it after Columbo Point on Jupiter Island which they had seen from their ships offshore. In 1894, businessman Wm. Henschel bought 640 acres (252 hectares) of land just east of Rockledge from Commissioner John Avers for $1,200 cash and erected a plantation house called "Henschel's Plantation". He also developed a small town on the property known as "Henschelville". Although he never moved to Rockledge himself, his business interests extended into the community which still retains its name today. In 1907 Fenton Epps acquired much of Henschelville including many homes and businesses; he renamed it "Epps Farms" after himself and his son-in-law Wm.,Jr.. The area became an agricultural center with cotton plantations being established along with citrus fruit orchards and cattle ranches until well into the 20th century. In 1926 Rolland Gault purchased 825 acres (309 hectares) east of downtown Rockledge from Jules Lobrand for $2 million dollars ($ in present day currency). Gault built one of Florida's first shopping malls there - The Rocks - eventually becoming one of its largest landowners and developers throughout much of CentralFlorida until his death in 1984 at age 101 years old. Rockledge, Florida was founded in 1905 by J.W. Baird and his brother-in-law, Fenton Shriver. The first permanent residents were Frommer brothers who arrived in 1906. By 1915, the town had a population of 150 people and included a grocery store, livery stable, post office, bakery and hotel. The Rockledge Iron Works was started in 1907 by J.A. Rockledge and operated until 1942 when it was purchased by the United States Steel Corporation for $13 million. It produced tons of steel for military purposes during World War II.
