Rockledge is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Rockledge" originated from a plantation where several families lived and worked on the land that now makes up the town. After the Plantation was sold in 1851, many of these families moved to other parts of Florida or away from South America founded new plantations in this area. One such family, the Thompsons, bought land near what is now Rockledge in 1875 and built a home there which they named "Thompsons Manor". When they passed away in 1925 their son Harry Thompson continued to live there until his death in 1966. In 1947, due to an increase in visitation by tourists for white sand beaches along Clearwater Bay (then known as Indian Key), state officials purchased additional land within what is now Rockledge and designated it Clearwater Bay State Park. In 1954, state officials renamed it Rockledge after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Ridgecrest Estate (now called FDR Presidential Library & Museum). Today much of that original parkland remains undeveloped while sections have been developed including: Sunnyside Dr., Enterprise Rd., Boca Raton Blvd., Sunrise Blvd., and Belle Glade Dr.; all located within city limits of Kissimmee The first people to settle here were Dutch colonists who arrived during King Philip's War (1655-1664). They are said to have planted crops and built homes near what is now downtown Rockledge before moving on againometime after 1668 when they discovered an estuary leading into Tampa Bay that would make shipping easier from their location on Hillsborough Island. A second group of Dutch colonists landed around 1714 but abandoned their settlements because of Indian attacks which continued intermittently through most of the eighteenth century; this led to increased efforts by Spanish settlers who established missions farther east along Tampa Bay starting about 1763 CE to try and gain control over this region since they could not go against British forces occupying North America at this time. Spain had already lost control over Cuba following its war with France so although attempts were made by both Spain and Great Britain to retake Florida via military campaigns throughout history some aspects of Floridians' political landscape remained largely unchanged until after American independence! For single story homes battery operated lights might be allowed inside porch light must extend out 1 foot beyond eaves otherwise door opens into stock room or garret each house should have 2 chimneys one on topstory only one visible outside any window except attic windows no fires may be lit indoors without prior written consent From 1836–1839 Revd Hugh Jones carried out plans published by Revd Hugh Jones surveying Parish Boundaries Surveyor’s Office publickly printed Onshore Waterfront Lands In Orange Coasts District No 11 pg 3ff Map showing lots surveyed . Rockledge, Florida is a small city located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 6,804 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The climate in Rockledge is humid subtropical. First settled by English colonists in 1794, the town of Rockledge was named for Reverend John Dickson (1757-1827), an Episcopal priest and explorer who died on an expedition to find a new route to India during 1802. In 1809, Dickson's widow married Captain Samuel Jethro Gibbs (1768-1851), who had been stationed at Fort Moultrie on St. Augustine Bayou. In 1830, Gibbs purchased 2,500 acres of land at what is now the eastern edge of Rockledge from his father-in-law, James Pritchard. Captain Gibbs built two sawmills and began growing rice as early as 1834; however, it wasn't until 1861 that he became interested in sugarcane production and started planting large tracts of sugar cane near present day Spring Lake Drive and US 1A south of town. By 1865 over 90% of all sugar cane acreage in Polk County had been planted by Captain Gibbs and his son Archibald Bogue Gibbs Sr.. In 1867/68 General Ulysses S Grant visited Tampa and met with Captains Archibald Bogue Gibbs Sr., Robert Ewing Fellows (founder and first president of Delta Sigma Phi sorority) and William Hargrave Key (a general officer who served under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt) while on tour through southeastern Florida; during this visit some interest in purchasing land led to the erection of a barn on what would later be known as Gulf Street across from Camp Bowie State Park overlooking Pensacola Harbor; Greenock Wharf was added to Naval Station Pensacola during this time period which allowed goods arriving from Mobile Bay bound for Pensacola Harbour to be unloaded there before being transported inland via road or canalette to storage yards adjacent to Fort Brooke before being sold off or processed into products such as flour or oil
Rockledge was founded by farmers in 1848. The area now includes the Rockledge community, which is located on a bluff overlooking the St. Johns River. The early town was known for its salt production, but it also produced tobacco and rice. In 1890, Rockledge became an incorporated municipality with a population of 100. By 1912, the population had reached 300 and by 1966 it had grown to 1,500 residents.
