Rockledge was founded in 1917 as a small town in Hillsborough County, Florida. It became an incorporated city in 1959 and is now located in Polk County, Florida. The first coffee shop opened in Rockledge in 1917. In 1960, the first grocery store opened in Rockledge and has since been replaced by two restaurants and a health club.
Rockledge is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton-Ponte Vedra Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Rockledge area has been inhabited by Native American and African Americans for centuries. The first white man to settle in what is now Rockledge was Captain John Stroud in 1827. He established a trading post on the Black River and built a house there which still stands today as part of the local Historic district. In 1853, Captain James Jarrell arrived from Georgia with his family and set up shop hereabouts. A year later, he married Anna Jordan and came to live in what is now Rockledge. They had one son, James Jarrell Jr., who also lived in Rockledge until his death in 1893 at the age of 72 years old; he was buried here beside his father and mother within the limits of this historical district. It wasn't until after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much ofDuval County that residents of Rockledge began to rebuild their homes anew following efforts by then-Mayor Jack Levy (D) along with other community leaders including former Duval County Commissioner Lloyd Yarborough (D). In 2003, Mayor Buddy Dyer dedicated an approximately $5 million parkade project which included reconstruction of both main streets leading into town as well as installation of new sidewalks and paving along those streets; it also included replacement or renovation of many aging buildings within town center including the original courthouse building dating back to 1853 - all werepleted under Mayor Dyer's watchful eye as part of overall redevelopment initiative approved during his final term in office prior to his resignation effective January 1, 2004 As one result of that comprehensive redevelopment effort spearheaded by then-Mayor Dyer - retail businesses reopened near Main Street while several historic residences were completely renovated or replaced over time - rockledge became known nationally for its revitalization effort spearheaded by then-Mayor Dyer himself! Rockledge is a small town in Floridians panhandle, located about 25 miles southeast of Jacksonville on I-95. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Johns area. The town was founded in 1892 by English settlers who were attracted to its natural resources, including an abundance of limestone and sandstone hills. The name comes from a Native American word meaning "high ground." Rockledge's earliest residents were Methodists who arrived in 1892 from Liverpool, England. They built churches and schools in the community before moving out around 1925 when conditions became too harsh for such nomadic pioneers. In the early 1920s, Rockledge landowner John Denton developed what would become known as "Denton Heights" which spanned most of today'seast side of town between State Road 8A (now U.S. 61) and County Road A1A (now County Road 5). This development featured a mix of single-family homes, businesses, and medical facilities—the first such facility in Florida—and remains one of its largest employers to this day. During World War II, Rockledge played an important role as a military airfield used by both Allied and Axis forces during the war effort; it also saw significant civilian activity due to the large number of soldiers stationed there after Pearl Harbor . After hostilities ended, many servicemen returned home while others took up farming or other forms of technological advances that Rockledge would soon experience . In 1955, rockledge incorporated as a city under state law administered by county commissioners concurrent with nearby St Augustine . Today Rockledge has grown significantly since incorporation with new developments along State Road 8A (U.S 61) and County Road A1A (County Rd 5). Rockledge was founded in 1903 by J.B. Rockledge and his wife, Lillie, on a small island in the middle of Tampa Bay. The name "Rockledge" is derived from a mangrove tree that once stood on the site. The couple started out as farmers, but soon realized that they had an opportunity to develop the land they were living on. They hired help to clear the forest and build their first house, which they named "The Gables". In 1928, J.B. Rockledge married Gladys Moody and together they started what would become one of Tampa's most successful businesses: The Moody Company Ltd., which produced agricultural supplies and services. Their company went through several expansions before it merged with another business in 1978 to becomerockledge-moody Incorporated! In 1992,the company became part of Peet's Coffee Corporation!
