Rockledge is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,987 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Rockledge were white settlers who arrived in 1855. A post office called "Rockledge" was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1959. The name derives from rocks that had been found on the site. In 1892 a small community of Spanish Americans called Rancho de las Pulgas was founded near Rockledge by Captain Manuel Antonio Rivera and his family. They named their community after an alligator they observed swimming through their property fence into a nearby swamp. In 1907 the then-new county of Broward was created from portions of Palm Beach County and included both Rockledge and Las Pulgas among its communities. For many years Rockledge residents voted against annexation tobroward because they felt that it would mean more development at their location than they could handle financially. However, annexation eventually happened due to pressure from developers and voters in Broward County overall; within three decades, much of what is now Rockledge had been developed as well as neighboring towns such as Pompano Beach and Coconut Creek . Today's downtown area contains several stores including JCPenney, Macy's, Sears & Roebuck, Dick's Sporting Goods and Kohl's Marketplace which anchors one block of Centre Street between Atlantic Avenue and I-95A/ 95E which forms the core commercial district for this large city center located just outside Fort Lauderdale on Boca Raton Boulevard across from US1A/ US 1E/ US 192B
