Rockledge is a small town in southern Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 971 at the 2000 census. Rockledge is located on the Gulf of Mexico between Fort Myers and Naples. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rockledge were Spanish explorers who landed there in 1559. At the time it was part of the Kingdom of Spain and its governor, Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, named it "Las Palmas". The area that includes present-day Rockledge was part of Indian Land west of Tampa until 1821 when it was annexed by Florida from Alabama. Founded in 1835 as a steamboat landing on Mobile Bay by brothers John Baptiste and James Troup, Rockledge became an important seaport for smuggling goods southward during the 1830s because of its location at one end of a long shipping canal linking Mobile with St. Augustine and points beyond. By 1860, however, smuggling had become so expensive that Captain Thomas Foard built Fort Foard to keep smugglers at bay. In 1865 Francisco Ponce de Leon discovered land off Cannes Beach on which he founded St Petersburg in 1663 as a trading post on his return from his unsuccessful attempt to find Cuba's sugarcane sources through travel throughout Central America. In 1867 Ponce de Leon's heirs sold 1/3 interest in St Petersburg to John Sisson for $2 million ($ when measured against prices quoted for similar land around Tampa). As development expanded along Tampa Bay shorelines throughout the 19th century businesses grew up around fishing villages such as Fernandina (established 1768), Live Oak (1812), Clearwater (1836), Dunedin (1854) and New Port Richey (1860). Many saw their opportunity to exploit new oil reserves discovered alongshore during this time period; consequence being that many small towns followed suit becoming boomtowns while others fizzled due largely to economic problems caused by overdevelopment or lack thereof Basset Point Light House became world-renowned for its strong light show each night from 1861 until 1941 due primarily to deposits offshore brought about by techniques then still under development including drilling rigs Anna Maria Island became an important stopover point for steamboats traveling between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay before they reached deep water
