Taylor, commandant of the Marines at Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay, purchased a cannon from a French artillery captain. In 1911, Taylor gifted the cannon to Rockledge City Hall as a symbol of friendship and military Cooperation between Tampa Bay and Rockledge. The cannon was used as part of ceremonial events during World War I and II and is currently on display inside the City Hall Museum. In 1949, after service in Korea with the Marine Corps Reserve Unit 1st Battalion 2nd Marines, Major General James W. Patton arrived in Rockledge to take command of Task Force 68th Infantry Regiment which had been activated there earlier that year. Patton donated two cannons to Task Force 68th Infantry Regiment which were then placed into storage atFort Brooke until they could be given to the unit permanently. Afterward, these cannons were displayed for public viewing atthe fort until 1984 when they were moved back to their original location insideCity Hall museum where they are now on display. The history of Rockledge begins with insurance companies and railroad executives who wanted an easier way to get around Miami's traffic congestion. They built a wooden village on a bend in the St Lucie River that they named "Rockledge." It served as an informal trading post for farmers and hunters who traveled through the area. In 1911, when American Electric Railway proposed building a line from Miami to Tampa via Rockledge, local officials objected because they felt that their villages would be destroyed by construction crews working near their homes. American Electric Railroad abandoned its plans after learning that they were not going to be able to get permission from Miami City Hall to build any railway within city limits at that time. In 1963, when Rockledge became part of larger town of Rockledge, it retained its small village character with only 1/10th of what it had once consisted of. Today, Rockledge is one of the most important economic centers in Polk County with over 100 businesses operating here including Mid-Florida Financial Services Inc., Western Union Corporation, Regions Bank etc..
