Rockledge is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Lakeland-St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Rockledge was Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León on December 15, 1543. He named it after his friend Rodrigo de la Rúa y Cabeza who had advised him on travels in the area. In 1821, Jacksonville lawyer and landowner James Sisson purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of meridianal land east of downtown Gainesville from the Seminole Nation for $6,000. Sisson named his holdings "Rockledge" because he thought its natural advantages would make it a desirable place to live and raise crops. In 1828, Ulysses S. Grant bought 640 acres (2 km²) northwest of downtown Gainesville from James Sisson for $18,000 and renamed it "Grant's Hill". In 1847–48, Orlando businessman George Ault acquired 496 acres (1 km²) northeast of downtown Gainesville from James Sisson for $120 ($ in present-day Canadian dollars). Ault called his properties "Ault's Park". In 1865–66, Samford College hired architect Alfred Brickell to design a two-story brick building on what is now US 27/92 north of US 90 near what is now Interstate 95 south of Rockledge. The college opened in 1865 as Western Reserve University under President Andrew Johnson. When Johnson was impeached in 1974 and removed from office by Congress, Western Reserve University became an independent institution known as Florida State University with campuses in Tallahassee and Miami Beach until 1990 when they merged into FSU campus in Seminole County. It has been reported that there have been no permanent residents living within Rockledge limits since before World War II due to its small size relative to other towns around Gainesville; however this may be inaccurate as there are several families which own homes within close proximity to their children or grandchildren without actually living there full time

Rockledge is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Stuart Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now called Rockledge was first settled by Seminoles in 1836 as part of the relocation of their government and people to Fort Brooke on Lake Okeechobee. A post office called Rockledge was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1896, George W. Dolan built the first home in what is now Rockledge; it became his family's summer home for many years. In 1903, he married Gertrude Pritchard from Winter Haven, Florida; they had two children there before moving to Hollywood Hills, California where Gertrude continued to raise her children until her death in 1970. Dolan played an important role as a legislator and Governor of Florida from 1923 until his death in 1938. He also served as President of Trustees for Palm Beach State College (now University Park). In 1954, Samuel Goldwyn bought land near present day Rockledge Boulevard and Orange Avenue for $1 million dollars which he planned to use as a retirement community for actors and movie stars who vacated their studios after World War II. The project failed to take off due to financial reasons but has been mentioned occasionally since then as possible future development around the corner on that property at 8555 Orange Ave., although no plans have ever materialized
Rockledge is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 32,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Rockledge was founded by John Fitch and his family on December 7, 1906 as a small farming community on the banks of Dixie Lake. The name means "rocky bank" in English and may be derived from one or more local boulders that were high enough to provide cover from raiding Native Americans during the 18th century. Fitch's business partner, J.C. Penney, bought land in Rockledge for $2,000 in 1907 and began to develop it into a small town with a post office and two stores. By 1912 there were 7 homes and 10 businesses in Rockledge- most of which are still standing today including JCPenney's original store building (now used as a restaurant), an old Methodist church (now used as apartments), and the now obsolete Ripleys School Building (now home to several residential properties). In 1916 when Miami-Dade County was created it included Rockledge within its boundaries; however, due to Fitch's death just three months later it didn't take any action until 1920 when county commissioners finally annexed Rockledge intoMiami proper In 1925 rockleye had 25 families living on Indian Road while other houses were being built north of Indian Rd., but this changed when Coral Gables annexation happened so many people moved away from their homes near Coral Gables that most of these structures have since been destroyed or replaced by new buildings .Today 20%ofthe population lives within walking distance of downtown rockleye while 80%of residents are located within 1 mile of some form of public transportation
