Royal Palm Beach, Florida is a beautiful and secluded town in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of the 2010 census. The name Royal Palm Beach comes from its location on the palm beach of the same name. The town is located on State Road 59 about 12 miles south-southwest of Fort Lauderdale and about 20 miles east-southeast of Miami. It occupies a small area on the banks of the ocean which has been used forager settlements by Paleo-Indians and then by early Spaniards who named it La Romana de la Palma de la Guardia (the Roman/British Colony). In 1795, Spanish Governor Manuel O’Higgins renamed it Royal Palm Beach after Princess Amelia Eugenie of Spain who had married his younger brother Don Pedro Félix de Jesús y Gómez y Toro. At that time there were only 125 people living here with many working in nearby plantations such as those at Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. In 1854, King Phillip II granted Royal Palm Beach its first post office with mail service being provided to Ft Lauderdale by horseback riders carrying mail between Lighthouse Key and Lighthouse Point via an openair crossroads called “The Crossroads” near what is now Pompano Beach Boulevard. As this was an isolated outpost surrounded only by mangroves on one side and coral reefs on the other side, shipping was difficult until ferries were built in 1914 which connected Railroad Bluffs across to Islamorada Island close to where today's Pedra Branca Street runs parallel to Orient Express Drive (the present day Causeway Boulevard) just west of downtown Royal palm beach. The Royal Palm Beach area was first settled by the Menendez family in 1835. The town of Royal Palm Beach was founded on May 10, 1875, by Major General John P. Menendez and his wife, Sarah. The town became a separate municipality in 1912. The County of Palm Beach was created in 1925 and incorporated as a county seat on November 15, 1926. In 1955, the name of the county changed to Pinellas County after then-Governor James L. Sweetley announced that he would not seek re-election and end Florida's prohibitionist party rule before it could take effect statewide. On December 5, 1959, Royal Palm Beach became a city under charter granted by Pinellas County Commissioners majority vote over Mayor Alesandro Ribeiro's objections.
