Royal Palm Beach, Florida is a town in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Royal Palm Beach" comes from its status as one of two counties in which white children could attend black schools until the early 20th century. The first settlers to Royal Palm were citrus growers who traveled down the Atlantic Coast and became interested in lightening protection against pirates and other threats to their crops. In 1867 businessmen J.P. Morgan and Wm. Hinson bought land east of Fort Pierce for $3,000 (equivalent to $ million today). They named their new community Royal Palm Beach because they wanted it to be known only as a resort area for white people only – not as a place where blacks could live either peacefully or tumultuously. This policy was short-lived; within 10 years Royal Palms had become an all-black community with more than 100 homes and businesses including stores, churches, schools and hotels. In 1896 Commissioner of Internal Revenue Damon Runyon moved his family from New York City to Royal Palms after being offered a job in Lighthouse Point on Sarasota Island by then Governor John Dolphus Chafee (who later became President). He started writing stories about life on Long Key before he died there in 1944 at age 83 years old from an intestinal blockage caused by eating too much green fruit during his boating trips around Florida's Keys coastline. His wife Nellie later wrote about him in two books: " Damnation Alley" (1948) and "Lighthouse Point" (1959). A 1932 movie based on Damon Runyon's life starred Lon Chaney Jr., opposite Burt Lancaster as the corrupt commissioner Santa Monica Pierpont etc.. After World War II many Hollywood celebrities used nearby Clearwater beach for vacations while they awaited new tax laws that would allow them back into America; this reduced the use of Royal Palms so much that it eventually disappeared from government maps entirely by 1970 when development began encroaching upon its boundaries again prompting locals to rename it Pinecrest or just plain RpalmBeach instead of RoyalePalmBeach
Royal Palm Beach was founded on May 14, 1892 by Henry Flagler. It is a surfer-friendly community located on the north coast of Florida, about 20 miles south of Miami. The name "Royal" came from its then-owner, Prince Rainier III of Monaco.
