Safety Harbor, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 54,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The city was founded by Englishman John Fenton in 1892 as a Spanish settlement on the banks of the bayous Saint Petersburg and its namesake harbor. In 1907 it became an incorporated town under the name of Port St. Lucie. In 1925 it changed its name to Safety Harbor after its incorporation into Miami Beach Municipality. The safety harbor designation has been dropped from most official documents since then because of rights-of-way issues with neighboring towns and cities that have acquired similar namesakes (e.g., Steak Bayou). The economic center of Safety Harbor is its anchorage along Biscayne Bay where large cruise ships dock to berth for extended periods while repairs are done or new equipment is being added to their fleets. Many small businesses also anchor there including restaurants, cafes and mom-and-pop stores which service passengers disembarking from cruises and motorists driving distances away from boating activities around the bayou during high season when traffic becomes backed up on Federal Highway 95A near Miami International Airport (MIA). During low season businesses close down while people either use Safety Harbor as a stopover or avoid visiting this busy anchorage altogether; however there are still few commercial areas located close to shoreline so visitors must be prepared for some rough seas when docking or disembarking from vessels at both pier terminals ashore and in the water offshore (see Boat ramp diagram below). There are several marinas available within walking distance but they can be expensive to use during low season as rates for slips range anywhere from $4 per day for a transient berth to $120 per week for an all inclusive Marina with trophy fishing charters available year round).
The town of Safety Harbor was founded on the north coast of Florida in 1835 by James McMinn and his wife, Catharine. The town was named after a harbor on Cuba's eastern coast that had been used by Spanish ships before it was seized by the United States. In 1841, McMinn sold the town to J.P. Morgan and His Brothers who renamed it Jacksonville. Safety Harbor experienced major growth in the late 19th century as thousands of workers from throughout the state came to take advantage of new factory jobs openings in Jacksonville and other nearby towns. During World War I, Jacksonville played an important role as a supply center for troops fighting in Europe. In 1924, Jacksonville merged with neighboring Stonington to form safety harbor under one governance system for all its municipalities. The merger led to increased competition among local businesses and over time Safety Harbor became known as one of Tampa Bay's "fast-growing" suburbs. In 1978, Safety Harbor voters passed a referendum approving annexation into Hillsborough County; this action made Safety Harbor the first municipality within Hillsborough County to be considered for annexation since its founding. On December 7, 1979,Safety Harbor became part of Hillsborough County through absorption into the county's Comprehensive Plan process which followed a public hearing process where citizens were able to voice their concerns about potential effects such as traffic congestion and increasing taxes while also providing input on potential transportation plans for county residents should they become incorporated into Hillsborough County.
