Safety Harbor is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Biscayne metropolitan area. The name Safety Harbor comes from Spanish "Isla de La Esperanza" meaning "Island of Hope." In 1892, A.P. Morrison and Wm. Halsey built a gristmill on the island for community use and soon other businesses followed suit making Safety Harbor one of the most prosperous towns in Escambia County. In 1915, Henry Fenton developed a landing strip on an island inlet to provide easy access for barges carrying goods from Pensacola to Mobile and points southward. This became known as "Fenton's Landing." When World War II began, Signal Corps troops were stationed at nearby Camp Moore to conduct classified radio communications for military commanders in Northwest Africa and Europe. As war continued to grow more complex, Signal Corps personnel needed more space so they set up shop on land adjacent to Fenton's Landing until 1946 when they moved into their present headquarters building on Macon Boulevard which stands today as a historical landmark overlooking downtown Safety Harbor. During its heyday as an agricultural center with banana plantations and cattle ranches located all around it (the horses that Scouting used for transportation were also taken there), Safety Harbor also became home to many textile mills which produced basic clothing items such as T-shirts and overalls until 1978 when these operations closed down due to competition from China who had come onto the American market with cheaper clothes made out of poorer quality materials than those made in America using traditional methods like hand weaving and spinning cotton yarn by hand).

The town was named after a nearby island,Safety Harbor Island, which was used as a landing spot for small boats during the days when brigandage was a major problem in the area. In 1967, Safety Harbor became a city Limits jurisdiction and in 1994 it annexed the neighboring community of Gulfport. The history of Safety Harbor can be traced back to 1892 when two brothers from Pensacola, Florida started a small fishing village called Harmony on safety harbor island. The Harmon brothers soon realized that there were no other villages or towns in the area for fishermen to stay in so they built their own houses and began to invite people to come live here. By 1916, there were already several hundred residents living here and soon word spread about what this quiet little fishing village had to offer: beautiful beaches, friendly people, great food (which included fresh seafood), convenient air supply and excellent phosphate rock resources.(1) In 1967, Gulfport became an annexe of Safety Harbor due to political disagreements between those two communities over annexation rights.
