The Coast Guard was established in 1935 as the Harbor Defense Board. In 1959, it became a separate agency, the Coast Guard, with its own system of leadership and governing procedures. In 1916, the Coast Guard bought its present facility at 9th and Promenade Streets. The current building was built in 1928 and is used by both the Coast Guard and the city of Safety Harbor.
Safety Harbor, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The City of Safety Harbor was incorporated on November 3, 1911 from portions of Fort Myers and Leeuwin City. At the time of its incorporation it had a population of just under 2,000 individuals. However, over time the city grew rapidly and by 1930 had reached a population of 11,500 residents. Today Safety Harbor enjoys an extensive economic base due to its location near both Tampa Bay and Miami Beach; its world-class shipyards; and its position as one of the most important naval ports in Southwest Florida. On July 1, 1961, parts of Fort Myers were annexed into Safety Harbor creating a new city with a total population of 15,684 people. On October 8 that year safety harbor announced plans to establish itself as an international trade center for Southwestern Florida with the opening of their first commercial building - The Seaweed Restaurant - located on US 41 across from US Hwy 26 in neighboring Mims.

By 1950, Safety Harbor had become an important seaport for the Florida Keys. In the 1970s,Safety Harbor underwent a major expansion that included the construction of several large shopping malls and other businesses. The city has since experienced rapid growth and development, making it one of the most populous cities in Florida. The history of Safety Harbor begins with its incorporation as a small town on May 25, 1907. At that time, it was located on the eastern edge of present-day Miami-Dade County. The town quickly prospered due to its location in an area rich in fruit trees and agriculture - both of which were key to its early development. By 1950,Safety Harbor had become one of the most prosperous citrus towns in Florida - thanks in part to its long history of trade with Key West and Cuba. As Safety Harbor grew larger and more popular, it began to face challenges from neighboring communities that wanted to expand their reach into what was then a largely rural area. This led to some tense moments between Safety Harbor residents and their neighbors - but ultimately those disputes led to increased commerce and growth for both communities; today, safety harbor is home to some of Miami-Dade's most famous businesses - including two major shopping malls (the One World Trade Center complexand PortMiami) as well as numerous restaurants and hotels.
The area that is now Safety Harbor was once part of the Spanish colony of Florida. The first European to come to this area was Pedro Menendez, who landed in 1565. He named the place Santiago de Cuba after the Cuban city he had been visiting. In 1697, the Englishman John Smith discovered land in this area and named it Safety Harbor after his ship, the "Santiago". This was also the year that English colonists began to arrive in large numbers and begin settling here. By 1795, there were over 200 people living here. The town started to grow rapidly and by 1815 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson took office as President of America and ordered all Seminoles (native Americans) removed from Florida. This led to a large-scale military campaign against these Indians called The Indian War or The Battle of Safety Harbor which lasted for several months. Aftermath: More than 100 Seminole men were killed including many children
