The town of Safety Harbor, Florida was founded in 1898 by John F. Dillon and his wife, Lillie. The community was named for the harbor that lies at its center. When the American Civil War began, the town quickly became a staging ground for soldiers on their way to battle. The harbor also served as a popular spot for boating and fishing. After the war ended, Safety Harbor gradually grew and prospered as a commercial center. In the early 1920s, Safety Harbor became known for its children’s amusement park, which remains one of the most visited tourist attractions in the area today. In 1925,Safety Harbor was incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly with new development around its central square. By 1930, Safety Harbor had become one of Florida’s fastest-growing cities and it soon emerged as an important player in statewide politics. In 1938, Mayor Harry Whelan designated Safety Harbor as Florida’s official capital city and he helped make it an attractive place to live and work. During World War II, safety harbors across America were put into use to provide temporary shelters for warships while they underwent repairs or upgrades. And so it was that when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour on April 6th 1941 – just two weeks after President Franklin D Roosevelt had sent US forces into combat against Japan – Safety Harbor stood ready with its naval vessels at anchor off shore (and more than 1,000 citizens working out of local businesses). Despite being under siege from air raiders for almost three days (the worst such attack in American history), no damage whatsoever was done to eitherSafety Harbors central square or any other part of town during this time period; in fact many people credit locals with saving many lives by keeping their heads down until things calmed down later that evening! Of course everyone would love nothing more than to recount all those amazing stories about what went wrong that day – but those are all long past now…
The Safety Harbor area was first settled in the late 1800s. At that time, it was a natural place to build because of its strategic location between Tampa and Jacksonville. The area became known as anhaven for pirates and smugglers, and it was also a popular spot for smuggling goods across the Florida Strait. In 1907, the United States built a military airfield in Safety Harbor. This airfield helped to make Safety Harbor an important commercial center for the region. In the 1940s, safety measures were put into place at the airfield to prevent accidents and ensure safe flying operations. After World War II, many businesses moved out of Safety Harbor. However, some businesses kept their doors open until later in the decade when Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of what had been built there. In 1990,Safety Harbor was renamed after then-Governor Jeb Bush in recognition of his support for development in the area during his tenure.
