The city rapidly grew into an important commercial center and tourist destination for the region. By the 1920s, Harbour City had become one of the leading vacation spots in Florida. In 1933, Hurricane Charley destroyed much of Harbour City and killed many residents. The city came back to life thanks to donations from local businesses and citizens. After World War II, safety concerns led to the development of new defences such as watch towers and levees around Harbour City. In 1872, Captain John Prentice established the Captain John Prentice Paper Mill which produced high quality paper products such as ballots, letters and notices. The mill continued to operate until it went bankrupt in 1907.
