In Safety Harbor, Florida, the first coffee shop opened in 1935. It was known as The Coffee House and served coffee from a truck parked on the street. In 1941, Dutch Bros. Coffee Company established its shop at 7500 Gulf Boulevard in Safety Harbor and continued to serve coffee from a truck until it closed in 1984. The first barista inSafety Harbor was Mrs. Belle Haggarty who worked at Dutch Bros. Coffee Company for over 35 years. In 1978, she started her own business called Belle's Café which remains open today and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with pastries and coffee drinks. In 1984, The Coffee House moved to its current location at 7500 Gulf Boulevard which became the first Starbucks store in the area. Today, Belle's Café continues to serve up delicious breakfast foods such as eggs benedict or omelets while also carrying a wide variety of tea and coffees including their famous safety harbor Blend (a blend of robusto beans from Africa and Sumatra).
Safety Harbor is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida region. The population was 7,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded by Protestants in 1892 as a logging and fishing community. By 1907 it had developed into a small commercial center with a school, post office, store and two hotels. In 1912 Safety Harbor became an incorporated village under the name of Port Charlotte. The first safety harbor lighthouse opened in 1916 and was replaced by a new lighthouse in 1928. In 1959 Safety Harbor became an unincorporated community within Miami-Dade County after incorporation of neighboring towns of North Bay Village (later Hollywood) and Biscayne Park (later Kendall). A shopping mall called "Mall at Harbour" opened on May 16, 1984 adjacent to US 1/US 95 Business Loop east of the original port city limits on Harbour Point Road. The mall was anchored by JCPenney, Sears and Kmart stores; anchor tenants over time included Lowe's Home Hardware, Michael's Stores and Macy's Department Store chain until its collapse in 2009 due toahyster infection problems at their stores across South Florida that were unrelated to Mall at Harbour operations; since then only JCPenney remains as an anchor tenant. The malfunctioning escalator contributed to major losses for Mall at Harbour which closed its doors permanently on November 5, 2009 after more than $130 million in liabilities including interest payments on loans taken out for the mall redevelopment have not been paid off as of December 31, 2017[1]. In October 2016 City Councilwoman Katrina Brown proposed amending zoning laws so that all businesses within 100 feet (30 m) of any school would be required to obtain permits from the School District before opening; this proposal would have stopped most retail establishments from opening near schools without prior approval from district officials

Today, Safety Harbor is one of the oldest communities on the Florida Keys and retains much of its history including its stringent safety regulations which have helped make it one of America's most popular tourist destinations. The town has also been home to many notable residents such as author Joady Goldman and businessman Howard Hughes.
The Safety Harbor area was first populated in the late 1700s by Native Americans. The area was later purchased by Spanish settlers, who named it San Marcos de la Palma. In 1821, the area became part of the United States and was renamed Jacksonville. The town of Jacksonville grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its location on a major shipping route and its access to water resources. In 1868, Jacksonville was incorporated as a city and soon became an important center for trade and industry. During World War II, Jacksonville played an important role in the Allied war effort by providing military support to allies such as Great Britain and France. After the war, Jacksonville experienced rapid growth as a suburb of Miami Beach. However, economic decline led to large municipal debtors defaulting on their payments in the early 21st century and prompted a government bailout that saved the city from financial ruin.
