The town of Sanford, Florida is located in Lee County and has a population of around 508. The name Sanford was given to the community by General Andrew Jackson who named it for Samuel Sanford, one of his close friends. The first settlers in the area were farmers and woodsmen who started to come to the area in the early 1800s. In 1824, a school was built in what is now known as downtown Sanford and small businesses began to grow. A courthouse was built in 1832 which served as a justice of the Peace district until 1898 when it was moved to Tallahassee. The town got its start as a railroad stop on the Jacksonville-Tallahassee Railroad and soon became an important center for agricultural production. In 1903, Sanford became part of Lee County and has been growing steadily ever since. There are several museums located within walking distance of the town including the Seminole County Museum which focuses on local history and culture; The Polk History Museum with artifacts from both the early days of Sanford until today; and The John Smeaton House Museum which tells the story of one of America's most famous landowners - Sir John Smeaton - through interactive exhibits, oral history interviews, art galleries, events and more. Today, Sanford is an attractive location for retirees or those looking for a lively day out with family or friends. Sanford is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Sanford was founded in 1885 by J.C. Sanford and his family. It became a city in 1959 and remains part of the Polk County government today. Sanford is located on the Stonington River between Lake Wales and Winter Park. The first Europeans to visit Sanford were Spanish explorers who discovered the river's presence on October 3, 1539 while exploring what is now Orange County, California, as they traveled down the Santa Fé route from Mexico City to explore South America for Spain under captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo named this area San Fernando de la Palma because he found some palm trees there that bore fruit like those found in Europe but with sweet flavorings (the fruit being called "palm," meaning "fruit"). On November 6, 1549 Hernando de Soto explored this same area when he passed through present-day Polk County on his way south from Cuba towards Florida during his exploration of Central America; he also named it Fort Saint Augustine after one of his captains from Havana Castle San Francisco de Asís). In 1885 J.C. Sanford purchased 5 acres (2 hectares) of land along the Stonington River east of Lake Wales for $1 per acre ($/acre). He built a home on this property which still stands today: The White House Arms Building (now known as First National Bank Tower), which served as both a bank and office building until 1979 when it was replaced by The Plaza shopping center across Constitution Boulevard from where it still stands today In 1886 Mrs. Juana Ayerdel Ramos donated two Lots 8 & 9 in what is now downtown Sanford for public use as an open air market place known as Broadway Market Place where farmers could sell their produce direct to consumers without going through stores or merchants In 1915 Drury Wagon Road was designated State Route 10 within city limits concurrent with creation of Sanford Municipal Airport just east of current day Interstate 495 exit 20A Mrs. Ayerdel Ramos donated four more lots adjacent to her original two tracts including Lot 12 near intersection of Broadway & Clearwater Streets which became Raymond James Stadiums football stadium circa 1970s prior to its demolition following Hurricane Andrew ; these four lots are currently occupied by housing developments behind Raymond James Stadiums football stadium . Finally in 1923 Drury Wagon Road was extended beyond its original terminus at I-4 95 exit 20A becoming US 301 Alternate Rd Wellesley Drive terminating at SR 562 about south ofpresent day SR 562 intersection . This extension later became partorized with modern day neighborhoods such as Wesley Chapel, Largo Estates and Belleview Estates . In 1959 City Hall moved from its original location across Constitution Boulevard from First National Bank tower into what is now The Plaza shopping center across Constitution Boulevard from where it still stands today (). That same year North American Life Insurance Company moved out of their former building at 375 N Main Street into what is now The Plaza shopping center across Constitution Boulevard inside city limits (). In 1966 Palmer Broadcasting Company moved out onto 1st Avenue West outside city limits () and turned their main transmitter facility into TV Station KXTG effective January 1,, 1967 (). That same year Union Carbide Corporation vacated their old plant off University Drive just west sideof City Limits (). That same year HealthSouth Corporation vacated their old plant off US 301 Alternate Rd just south sideof City Limits (), turning that property over to the town () Effective February 14th , 1969 (), giving starttoward municipal incorporation () On December 13th , 1971 - less than one week after local elections - voters approved incorporation via normal processes (). The new municipality had an initial population size Of 2,521 residents (). On May 3rd , 1974 - less than six months after incorporation - groundbreaking took place for Community Development Financial Institutions Authority Incorporation Center upon designation by then Mayor Frank Boccioni as authorized agency providing financial services primarily within municipally created areas including but not limited to Downtown Sanford
Samuel Sanford was born in Sanford, Florida on July 3, 1819. He attended the University of Florida and became a lawyer in Gainesville. In 1853 he married Maria Easley and they had two children. From 1861 to 1865 he served as a Congressman from Florida's 1st congressional district. From 1865 to 1867 he was Governor of Florida. In 1868 he was elected Vice President of the United States and served until his death in 1889.
