Sanford, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. Sanford is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name Sanford comes from two Seminole Indian words: "san" meaning “place” and "dun" meaning “hill”. The first settlers in this area were white men who came to what is now Sanford in 1827 and named it after General James Wilkinson's estate on Dunwoody Creek where they had been camped for a week before their departure for Pensacola Bay. Wilkinson himselfesteaded land along the creek and his heirs continued to farm there until about 1880 when some of them sold their holdings to John Wesley Dobbs who founded the city of Jacksonville below which Sanford grew up. In 1871, J.D. McKay bought 8 acres (3 ha) northeast of present day Sanford from George Hickey for $1,000 cash and started building a house which he called McKay's Mill; it still stands today as one of the oldest structures in town. In 1904-05, Aiken County commissioners built an addition to McKay's Mill which now house the town hall and archives adjacent thereto. Gideon Bachelder purchased 1/2 mile (0 km) east of present day Sanford on December 7th 1861 from John Fitzpatrick for $5 per acre ($100 total). He named it Bachelder's Prairie because he expectedorate rain would fall here during his hunting trips into Sabine Lake near Naplesville Bottom Road today known as Bachelder Road between Sanford Center Parkway eastbound lanes and Palm Coast Boulevard westbound lanes). This property became known as Gable Park after Gideon Bachelder's son-in-law Drury Gable developed it into an immense country home with gardens that reached nearly to JupiterRoad opposite Fort Myers Beach Boulevard off UF Gulfport Campus Drive today known as Leslie Drive between Sanford Center Parkway eastbound lanes and Palm Coast Boulevard westbound lanes). It was originally leased out by Colonel Edward Pogue but soon became its own separate municipality within Duval County under his jurisdiction
