Sanford was founded on November 12, 1884 by J.D. Sanford and his brother-in-law Wm Aylett as a town in Seminole County on the southern border of what is now Lake Worth. The new city hall was built in 1921 onState Road 7 between Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard and Interstate 495/SR 222 (now State Road 8), becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Florida until it burned down in 2003 while being used as an event center for corporate events. In 1978, then Mayor John Deutch named Sanford "America's City" due to its progressivism since incorporation into Palm Beach County; Deutch also helped rename streets within the city limits after prominent Americans—Jared Kushner, Martin Luther King Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt—to reflect this designation. As one result of these events and others throughout history associated with or located within Sanford—which has included baseball great Babe Ruth hitting .500 here in 1924 before moving to New York City—the community has been known nationally for its progressive values since incorporation into society.
