The Sanford, Florida National Guard has been in existence since 1884. The unit is made up of soldiers from throughout the United States and internationally. It is one of the oldest military units in the country. The history of the unit goes back to 1884 when it was created as a detachment of the Florida Infantry Regiment. In 1903, it became an all-volunteer force and was renamed the 7th Battalion, Seminole County Infantry (7SCI). In 1916, it was redesignated as Company A, 7th Battalion, Fla. Infantry (7FIB). From 1942 to 1945, Company A served with distinction in World War II as part of Air Forces Europe. After World War II ended, Company A continued to serve until 1958 when it was disbanded. In 1959, Congress passed a bill establishing the Sanford National Guard Unit and providing for its organization within the Department of Defense. Company A re-emerged on October 1st that year under this new name and began training soldiers for duty within the National Guard Bureau’s 902nd Military District Headquarters at Ft Worth Army Depot. On November 15th 1961 company arrived at Ft Worth and commenced their deployment to Vietnam where they served with distinction through most of 1966 grading out as first class members in 1969. The Sanford Army Ammunition Depot was established in 1917 and served as the country's main military ammunition storage and distribution center. The depot was closed in 1987, but it is still standing and serves as a museum today.
Sanford is a small town located in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Sanford is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known settlement in Sanford was made on May 12, 1835 by John A. Sanford and his family from Georgia. In 1838, George W. Sanford set up a ferry service between Sanford and Jacksonville for travelers coming to or leaving Miami Beach. In 1839, Jno Burch bought land near the present day intersection of US-4 & SR-2 for what became the nucleus of today's city of Sanford. In 1847, Henry Crenshaw developed land south of where US-4 now bisects SR-2 between CR 808 & 810 and built a mill on this property which became known as Crenshaw Mills Mall today. This early development led to the founding of downtown Sanford by incorporation on November 10th, 1865 with over 60 businesses existing within one block square while industries like banking and engineering mushroomed around it such as Wagon Wheel Coffee Company that still exists today as Pulse Coffee Company (opened in 1948). At its peak in 1920 there were over 1,000 residents living in Downtown Sanford while just 100 businesses represented an economy worth $1 million! One popular tourist attraction during this time was The Palm Beach Museum which opened in 1929 after being donated by Mrs Anna Muhlenkamp who also served as Mayor at that time! During World War II much activity took place here including munitions production which led to the destruction of many homes and businesses within Downtown Sanford but due to D-Day Allied troops liberated everything soon afterward! Despite all this destruction however Downtown Fargo Avenue retain most if not all its prewar commercial Characteristics with several large department stores (Hecht's Arcade closed down circa 1970), banks (First National Bank Building/Bankers Trust Plaza closed 1976; Citizens Bank building/Banque du Commerce Plaza closed 1978) as well as movie theaters (AMC – later AMC Theatres reopened 1987) giving it a unique feel that has lasted to this day! On January 17th 1930 Edwin Latham purchased 4 acres east of Alafaya Trail off US Highway 431 for what would become Lakeland College - one of America’s first NCAA Division I Schools services began offering instruction at the site on February 11th 1931 under Mr Dale Sayers followed by enrollment reaching its initial complement of 350 students providing opportunities for full scholarships nine years later! Today Lakeland College shares campus space with Rollins University - another private institution bringing more than 487 undergraduate students statewide including 7 Doctoral programs housed on 14 separate campuses across Central Florida makingLakeland home to someof Florida’s premier Colleges and Universities! As America entered into World War II efforts were made towards producing munitions here including construction upon then Callelee Air Force Base starting 1942 until 1945 when operations moved elsewhere due to concerns about possible enemy retaliation against targets inside our own country; however post war growth resumed with major new endeavors such as Fort Snelling Research Park established 1953 doing research into missile technology aiding national security becoming one half century ago? With so much going on during these times Downtown Sanford experienced increased traffic resulting in two bridges being constructed overSR-2 linking downtown with northbound I-4 Exit 191A(now signed Old Naugatuck Rd.)and southbound SR 528 interchange allowing motorists entering& exiting City Limits access North onto I-4 exit 191A(now sign Old Naugatuck Rd.), South onto SR 528 interchange allowing motorists entering& exiting City Limits access South onto I-4 exit 191A(now sign Old Naugatuck Rd.), finally East onto US 431 providing easy access especially during rush hour!!!!!
The first recorded army gift was a parcel sent to the Roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus by his friend and fellow politician Gaius Julius Caesar in 44 BC. This gift is thought to have been a set of armour, as it was not given to Crassus himself but instead to his son-in-law, Octavian. In 67 BC, Antony and Lepidus received gifts from Octavian, including an army campaign field tent and a supply train. This event is considered the beginning of the Flavian dynasty. In 68 BC, Augustus dedicated an amphitheatre in Rome to commemorate the victory over Mark Antony at Actium. He also granted citizenship to all free Roman citizens. This event is generally considered the end of the Republic and beginning of the Empire. There are many records of army gifts throughout history; however, there are few examples where items were specifically given as an act of appreciation or friendship between two commanders in battle. It is interesting to note that even after becoming emperor, Augustus continued to send gifts back and forth with his generals (eagerly awaiting their next victory). It seems that even after becoming one of world's most powerful empires, he still found time for friends!
In 1862, the Union army was attacked by Confederate forces at Antietam. The Union army lost over 1,500 men and equipment. Lieutenant Colonel James H. Mason donated a horse and saddle to the Union army in order to help them fight off the Confederate attack.
