In 1892, the Sanford coast guard was established. The first station on the town's beach was built on a sandbank overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. In 1902, the first Coast Guard House was erected in Sanford to house the coast guard and other government officials. The present structure, which is one of only a few remaining examples of original Coast Guard architecture in Florida, was dedicated on November 8, 1954. The Coast Guard has played an important role in safeguarding Florida's coastline for centuries. During World War II, for example, coastal communities throughout the state collaborated with the Coast Guard to provide security for ships and people stranded along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Today, members of the Coast Guard help protect Floridians from both natural disasters and terrorism threats. Among its many commendations, the Coast Guard has been recognized as an innovation leader by both FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and our own Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection (DBACP). In 2006, then-Gov. Jeb Bush presented Gov. Charlie Crist with a “Gift of Excellence” award recognizing his work leading up to passage of legislation creating DHS' National Flood Insurance Program – one of several innovative programs administered by DBACP under Governor Crist's leadership.

The city was named in honor of General George Washington Carver who donated land to the city for its development. The name "Sanford" comes from Indian traders who called this area "Sangaree." Orlando is located about 30 miles (48 km) east of Sanford and was first established as a trading post by Spanish settlers in 1565. During World War II, parts of Sanford were evacuated to Makepeace Key because of the Japanese threat to American territory in the South Pacific Ocean. In 1948, when Seminole County was created, it included most of what is now Sanford County except for part of the eastern border which became part of Lakeland Rancho Santa Fe National Park in 1957. On January 1, 1971, Sanford became one municipality within Citrus County and on January 1st 1978 it joined Lakeland Rancho Santa Fe National Park as Citrus County's only county park system
