The Dutch immigrants were followed by American farmers who started planting beans near Sanford in 1922. WithSoFla becoming an agricultural center, it became necessary for grocery stores to carry beans from various sources in order to meet demand from local customers. This led to the development of several large commercial roasters such as Peet's Coffee which continued operations until 1990. In that time, Boca Coffee also grew significantly- first becoming open for business on Easter Sunday, 1912; expanding into their current location on Third Street in 1925; and eventually taking over Peet's Building at 401 East Main Street which served as their headquarters until 1984 when it was moved across town to its present location at 1216 EAST MAIN STREET (now part of PNC Plaza). These years saw significant growth for both companies with simultaneous expansion into new markets around the country- initially reaching California before branching out into Texas, New York City, Illinois, Florida and even Australia! Today, Sanford remains an important hub for coffee production with two major roasters continuing operations alongside numerous smaller businesses providing quality products year-round. The name of the city comes from General James Wilder's victory over Spanish forces at Palo Alto on December 12, 1813 near today's Fort Worth Avenue and Hillsborough Street. In 1933, white developers bought land north of downtown for $3 million and began to build what would eventually be known as "The City." The original plan called for three-quarters of the new town to be built on a parkland plat that would have included Lake Seminole; however, due to objections from other towns within Seminole County (including Winter Garden), only two-thirds of the land was ever developed. Today much of downtown remains undeveloped while parts are being redeveloped into mixed-use buildings with residential uses such as apartments and condos as well as commercial spaces including a large Walmart Supercenter which opened in 2001 adjacent to Interstate 495/SR 335 which bisects Sanford CBD
