In 1920, Sanford went through another boom due to World War I when thousands of Americans came to fight in Europe. After the war ended in 1919, Increased demand for labor caused prices for goods to rise so much that some people left town while others decided to stay because they liked what they saw hereabouts. In 1951–1952 an economic recession hit southern Florida hard; jobs were lost due to automation (the introduction of new technologies) as well as price increases associated with newly implemented government policies related to social welfare programs like food stamps and Medicaid (Medicare). As a result of these factors – combined with low birth rates – the population decreased rapidly throughout much of the 1950s before slowly increasing again until reaching its present size over 10 years later in 2000 .
