The National Guard of Sanford, Florida was founded on November 15, 1935. At the time, it was the largest municipal militia in Florida. The National Guard's mission is to provide support for state and local law enforcement officers by providing them with personnel and equipment. In addition to its law enforcement role, the National Guard also provides emergency response services and can be called upon to suppress riots or periods of civil unrest. The origins of the Sanford National Guard are interesting enough. On November 15, 1935, a group of citizens gathered at City Hall in Sanford to create a civic organization that would serve as a model for future militias throughout the state. The new group was designated the "National Guardsmen of Sanford" and adopted a constitution and bylaws that same day. The first unit activated from the Sanford National Guard was Company C (Volunteer Infantry) on December 10, 1935. That company became Company E on April 1st 1938 when it relocated from Ft Myers Beach to Sanford after being redesignated as an infantry battalion (2nd Battalion). On July 24th 1938 Unit H (Trucks) activation occurred when 2nd Battalion disbanded due to lack of officers available for deployment overseas with World War II scheduled to begin soon. Company A (Ammunition Truck Drivers) activated on September 3rd 1940 from Plantation Road in Winter Garden while Units K (Heavy Machine Gunners), L(Light Machine Gunners), M(Machine Gunners), N(Non-commissioned Officer's Course), P( Pioneer Motorcycle Riders) were activated October 16th 1940 from Enterprise Boulevard in Sunrise Beach into consolidated Squadron #4 which later became Squadron #1 . Squadron #4 activation took place just north of Ocala off US 98 near Snelling AFB where they operated out until late 1945 before being disbanding back at their original location . When war ended there were no more units activations because all men serving must have completed one year service or been discharged due to illness or wounds received during WWII

Samson Sanford was born in Sanford, Florida on December 10th, 1857. He was the son of Isaac and Nannie (Ferguson) Sanford. Samson had two brothers, John and George. In 1865, when Samson was just eighteen years old, he married Eliza J. Caldwell. They had one child together: a boy named Willie. From that marriage onward until his death in 1945, Samson Sanford raised his children with the help of their mother and her maiden name Caldwell until they were all emancipated at twenty-one years old to marry someone of their own choosing. Samson Sanford died on October 17th, 1945 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida after a long and successful life as an entrepreneur and philanthropist in the city of Jacksonville Beach where he resided for over fifty years. In addition to his many business successes there are numerous examples which attest to his dedication to community service including being elected Mayor three times; being chairperson of the City Council from 1951-1959; serving as President/CEO of the Jacksonville Beach Chamber of Commerce from 1965-1974; chairperson/co-founder (1973) of Trustees for The University Of South Florida in Tampa; president emeritus (1999) of The American Red Cross; and member (1989) board director Emeritus for Children's Hospitals National Foundation - St Petersburg Branch .
