Despite this tough news environment though, Captain John Sanford remained determined to see his community through despite some challenges faced during its fledgling years (e.g., numerous natural disasters). It wasn't until 1862 when Confederate troops burned down part of their own village near present day Sarasota County that Captain John Sanford finally gave up on his dream of seeing his community thrive into an international center like Tampa did centuries before him! In 1834, Sanford became a county seat of Hillsborough County. In 1835, it became part of Polk County.
