In 1948, the navy decided that it would no longer maintain a ship berth at Sanford Harbor, so the Naval Shipyard built a new pier on land adjacent to town. This allowed for more efficient use of space by the navy and made it easier for citizens of Sanford to purchase items related to their military service. The gift shop continued operations until 1978 when it closed its doors permanently due to lack of business support. In recent years, there has been occasional visitation from members of the military which has led to some additions and updates to the store’s inventory including items related specifically to duty wear and insignia. The First Fleet sailed from Portsmouth on November 3, 1780, bound for North America. On December 12 that year, they attacked and captured Quebec City. They then sailed to Canada where they participated in the Battle of Lake Champlain on July 14th of that year. Aftermath: After Quebec City was captured by the British forces, several sailors from HMS Constitution volunteered to defect to the French side in order to bring back information about British tactics and weaknesses.resting at Halifax during this time were some of the most experienced naval officers available to help with French operations against British troops in North America.
