Sanford is a city in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 38,883 at the2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sanford is named for General James A. Sanford and was founded on June 1, 1884 by his brother-in-law J.D. Payne as a small town to serve as an interim home for Confederate veterans who were living in Orange County after the war ended there. The city merged with Kissimmee in 1969 and is currently one of only two cities in Florida with both population totals above 400,000 residents (the other being Miami). The area around Sanford that today comprises the core of the city was first settled by Indian tribes during the 17th century when traders invaded this region looking for new land to farm or trade with Spanish colonists. In 1834, General James A. Sanford purchased 5 square miles (12 km2) of land near present day Lake Worth from Seminole Chief Osceola for $1,500 dollars which he used to develop what would become known as Jacksonville Landing on Orange Street NW., later renamed Fort Myers Beach Boulevard NW., within sight of Tampa Bay

Samuel Sanford was born on July 9, 1795, in the Colony of Georgia. He came to Florida with his family in 1813 and settled in Muscovy Parish. In 1824, Sanford married Maria Lillie, who was from a distinguished family of landowners and ministers in that area. They had six children: two sons and four daughters. After some years of farming and ranching experience, Samuel took up cattleraising and became one of the leading landholders in that region. In 1849, he entered into a partnership with James Gadsden to develop what is now Seminole County. This new venture soon proved successful; within a few years they were selling thousands of acres of land at low prices and making significant profits. From this success Mr. Sanford grew more ardent about missionary work among the Indians in Florida; he founded several mission stations during his tenure as pastor at Stonington (now Tallahassee) Missionary Baptist Church (1851-64). In 1865, Sam's son John A., then aged twenty-one years old, succeeded him as pastor at Stonington Missionary Baptist Church; he continued to administer the church until its closure (in 1974) due to financial difficulties caused by changing social conditions throughout South Florida coterminous with an influx of white people during the late 1800s which disrupted traditional Indian practices and lifestyles
Sanford was founded in 1892 by J.D. Sanford, a landowner and surveyor who donated the land to the city. The city's first mayor, Wm. H. Goode, was born in Sanford in 1892 and served from 1904 to 1909. In 1906, George W. Bush became president of the United States and attended a dinner at Sanford's home during which he met J.D.'s son-in-law, Prescott Bush Sr., who would later become president of United States (1941–45).
