The area now known as Sanford, Florida was part of the Creek Nation until 1813. The area became part of the United States in 1828. The first white settlers were James and Martha Sanford, who founded a farm on the present-day site of Sanford in 1838. In 1861, Seminole Indians attacked and burned the farm, killing James and Martha Sanford. The Seminoles did not return until after the Seminole Wars ended in 1865. By 1900, there were around 2,500 people living in Sanford.
