The Sanford Coffee Company was founded in 1916 by George Sanford and his brother-in-law, Harry Smith. The company operated out of a small two-story brick building on Third Street in Sanford. The first coffee beans were roasted in a small roasting machine located at the back of the business. In 1922, George Sanford married Jessie Richardson and the business became known as the Richardson Coffee Company. In 1930, the company moved to its current location on First Avenue in Sanford. During World War II, the company produced coffee for military use. In 1951, Donny Peterson joined the Richardson Coffee Company as president and general manager. Donny had been with Joe's Coffee Company in Chicago before moving to Sanford to take over leadership of Richardson Coffee Co., Inc.. Under Peterson's guidance, the company grew rapidly and by 1961 it had become one of Florida's largest coffee companies.
