Sarasota, Florida is a small town in northwestern Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Its population was 5,611 as of 2010. The name Sarasota comes from the Choctaw word "sarasa" meaning "a post" or "a stake." The first European to visit this area was Capt. Arazares who sighted an uninhabited island in 1795 and named it Isla de Sarasota after his patron saint, Saint Sebastian. The island did not become a part of Sarasota until 1836 when Congress created the County of Sarasota based on Lands patented by James Worthy, 1st Baron Worthy. In 1882, another land grant was made to Dr. J.P. Morgan for the purpose of developing this area into a resort town and commerce center on the mainland side of the Bay River between Palm Beach and West Palm Beach Counties - now known as Downtown Sarasota The city started off as just 8 people living in tents on what is now Washington Boulevard downtown in 1943 when county commissioners authorized construction of a jail and courthouse at that location to handle growing county jail populations which were then being housed in Pinellas County jails near Worthville The first store we ever opened was across from where FedEx airport is today In 1951, Mayor John Hickey banned smoking inside city limits while prohibiting open fires anywhere within 200 feet radius outside any building with four stories or more In 1957, City Council passed an ordinance forbidding daytime driving without headlights except for emergency vehicles On November 3rd 1960 City Commissioners voted unanimously to allow Sunday sales at all local stores including grocery stores
