Sarasota, Florida is a city located in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 131,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area and is the county seat of Sarasota County. The city was founded on August 29, 1892 by J.P. Morgan and others as a small community on the northeast side of Sarasota Bay with a population of just 10 people. In 1906, Sarasota became an incorporated municipality with a population of 509 people and in 1928 it became an unincorporated township with a population of 2,752 people before becoming a city on January 1, 1990. City officials declared September 15th as "City Day" in honor of Mayor James Lollar who had spearheaded their incorporation process.
