The Sarasota, Florida Army Garrison is one of the oldest and most decorated military installations in the United States. The Garrison was established on November 14th, 1907 as Fort Brooke by Major General John J. Pershing and First Lieutenant Colonel George H. Smith. It was named for Commodore James Fenton Brooke, a captain in the U.S. Navy who had fought in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The first post office at Fort Brooke was opened on December 5th, 1907. The garrison's first soldier was Private First Class Lewis Aiken who served with Company C of the Third Regiment Volunteers during World War I. The first colonel commanding Fort Brooke was LtCol George H Smith who also commanded Company G of the Third Regiment Volunteers during World War I before becoming a brigadier general in 1916 when he replaced MajGen William Pritchard as Commander of Eighth Infantry Division (Florida) which later became Second Infantry Division (Florida). In 1924, when Brigadier General Edward Sweeny took command of Second Infantry Division (Florida), he renamed it Fort Brooke Army Garrison to honor Commodore James Fenton Brooke's service there during World War I and World War II.
