The first post office was established in 1855 and became known as West Palm Beach because that is where boats delivered mail to the mainland during the early 1800s. Sarasota, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida. The population was 30,865 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Sarasota County and second-largest city in the state of Florida after Miami. The first human settlement in what is now Sarasota County was made by Fannin's Expedition on December 17, 1829. In 1837, a group of Spanish Immigrants from Havana founded a mission called La Esperanza de la Bahía (The Hope of the Bay). This mission was destroyed by Seminole Indians on February 3, 1838. In 1840, George Jones purchased 2,000 acres (1 km²) of land east of Tampa for $10 per acre ($4 per hectare). He named it "Jonesboro" after himself and his brother Jameson Jones. By 1845, Jones had developed it into what is today known as Sarasota Peninsula with a small town called Indian Key at its center. In 1850–1851 A&P Exchange store opened on Broadway near present-day Congress Street and became one of the first commercial enterprises in what would become Sarasota County. Captain John Rodgers built Rodgers House on land that he donated to the town boundaries alongCongress Street in 1854 as part of his agreement to help create Indian Key as an agricultural community with good soil and water resources for future settlers. In 1865 Breeze Park was established as part of Stonington Landing development around present day Ponce de Leon Avenue northwest of downtown Sarasota which included many homes built between 1865 and 1870 by Hiram Sopher who ran Stonington Landing Development Company
