Sarasota, Florida is located in the southeastern United States and bordered by Tampa Bay to the north and east, Miami Beach to the south, and Jacksonville to the west. The city was founded on November 8, 1895 by Andrew Jackson Davis as a port on Sarasota Bay. It became an important center for cotton production in the early 20th century before becoming a popular resort destination. In 1999, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That year, Congress passed legislation authorizing the founding of a coast guard force to provide “safe haven for seamen during times of war or peace” (Humphrey 105). At that time there were no safety regulations governing shipping on America’s coasts which made it difficult for ships to dock safely with large numbers of people ashore; this is where volunteer boat crews came into play to help enforce safety regulations (Fletcher 168). It wasn’t until 1916 when Washington state joined forces with Oregon to create what would become known as The Pacific Northwest Patrol (PANW) which helped improve communication between federal agencies along America’s coastline (Lench 113). This cooperation continued throughout World War II when The National Security Act placed stringent restrictions on international shipping which limited how much cargo could be unloaded at sea without prior approval from American authorities (Booth 256-257). However, one important function that the Coast Guard played during World War II was evacuating Japanese nationals living in California who had taken refuge onshore (Matsuura 114). During peacetime however, many people forget that while they are buying presents for loved ones at Christmas time – most people actually serve their country every day by helping maintain our secure coastline! Today, Sarasota is known for its beautiful white-sand beaches, palm trees, and blue seaside waters. The city has witnessed many dramatic events over the years including the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure.
In 1835, the area that is now Sarasota was created when the Everglades were drained. The town was named for Sir John Fenton, 4th Baronet who purchased 640 acres of land in the present-day city from a Spanish immigrant settlement. In 1868, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a military post on Indian River in order to protect navigation on that river. The post was founded and named Ft. Myers, but it was moved to its current location in 1912 after Fort Myers became part of Sarasota County.
