Sarasota, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 2,832 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Sarasota was first settled by Seminole Indians in the late 18th century. In 1821, Captain John Stonington and his crew of USS Constitution captured an Indian princess named Sarasota while on their way to Cuba. She became the dowry of Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson and his regiment of U.S. Marines under Commodore James Purdy during the Seminole Wars against Spain and Mexico. The land that now Sarasota was purchased from the Native Americans in 1836 by Andrew Johnson for $2,000 dollars with 10% interest from Fort Brooke withinits boundaries which would later become Tampa Bayou (now Pinellas County). When Congress passed act 753 in 1861 authorizing Confederate States soldiers to be enlisted into Union Army units outside of Alabama and Tennessee, Johnson ceded what is now Sarasota County to Confederate control as part of thislarger region called "Union Territory." On December 12th 1861, Union General Order No. 25 reversed order numero 24 giving all citizens within Union Territory one vote per capita on propositions for taxation issues which were being brought before Territorial legislatures throughout southern United States including those here in Lee County such as Hillsborough Township where we currently live. In 1865, following Reconstruction which ended slavery in America through military action), Governor Andrew Johnson appropriated money for a local school system including one for our current community known as Indian Springs School District Number 1 or IUSD #1 when it opened its doors on August 15th 1870 with 16 students from four families; Mrs.. Mabel Murdock Parenteau (1859-1934), Mrs.. Alysse France Parenteau (1901-1978), Mr.. Leroy Jarrard (1896-1974) and Miss Lulu Jarrard (1920-. We arehonored to have been among them ever since.) As far back as 1868 there had been discussion about building a courthouse but no definitive plans had been made until after Lincoln's assassination when Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest recommended Tallahassee lawyer Elijah Parish Miller design a new type of courthouse rather than build an existing structure Director of Public Buildings Edwin Stanton replied “I do not know how much more I can take” so Miller instead submitted plans for two buildings designed by architect George Wirtz which would eventually become Jefferson Avenue Courthouse also known locally as simply “the old courthouse” although it actually predates Tallahassee Courthouse by over 25 years! It wasn't until 1907 that work started on what is today Jefferson Avenue Courthouse originally called "the old courthouse" after then Mayor Harry Ward took office who ordered bulldozers to clear everything out so he could build his private golf course! The first shovelfuls of earth hit the ground just south of State Road 301 near our present day Recreation Center Way back then everyone thought it might end up next door but nothing happened until 1924 when developer Alvaro Cortez built himself a home right across State Road 301 from where we stand today! In 1934 Mayor Harry Ward died suddenly leaving behind his dream project - creating a public library adjacent to City Hall - unfinished even though he had already given most if not all the money requested!!! After many failed attempts over several decades finally construction began on what would eventually become Sarasota Memorial Library which opened its doors November 3rd 1962 with nearly 400 books and periodicals! Today you can find almost every book published west of Mississippi except maybe Canada because they're too expensive!! One aspect that still remains controversial today is whether or not city hall should be located downtown like other municipalities or closer to cultural attractions such as arts center etc.? However regardless of your opinion, one thing is for sure - without City Hall SARASOTA COULDN'T EVEN EXIST!!!
