Sarasota's history dates back to the early 1800s. The area was known as the "Town of Sarasota" for many years and was a center for trade and commerce. In 1836, commissioners from New York recommended that Sarasota be founded as a town because of its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico and its rich resources. The first town meeting was held in late May 1836, and authority to form a town was granted by vote. The name "Sarasota" came from an Indian word meaning "place where sugar is found." The first settlers in Sarasota were farmers who arrived in the area around 1790. By 1850, there were over 100 farms located in what is now Sarasota County. In 1866, the county seat was moved from Fort Myers to Sarasota after voters approved a $10,000 appropriation by Congress to create the county. At that time, it comprised only 8 percent of Florida but had a population of over 300 residents. In 1898, John Denton opened Denton's Store on State Road 50 near today's intersection of US-1 and FM-4455. That establishment became one of the most important business establishments in Sarasota for more than 120 years; it still stands today and serves as a café/restaurant. In 1907, Henry Flagler built his first hotel - Flagler Beach Hotel - within minutes of landfall on Cuba Street at present day US 1/FM 4455 (the beachfront property now houses Flagler Marina). Early hotels served primarily as stopovers during sailboat trips between Tampa Bay and Key West along both coasts; they also hosted receptions for dignitaries visiting Florida during this period
