Sarasota, Florida is a city located in south-central Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 146,878. It is the county seat of Sarasota County and home to the University of West Florida. The area that now makes up Sarasota was first settled by Native American tribes in what is now Manatee County. In 1795, Captain John Smith discovered and named Sarasota Bay after his sister, Sara Landgrave of England. In 1819, Congress passed an act providing for Broward County to be formed from part of Manatee County. On January 3, 1888, as part as part of a statehood movement for Florida, citizens of adjacent Levy Township voted to secede from Sarasota County and incorporation into Pinellas County. On December 6th 1907, a motion to annex Miami Beach was seconded by Mayor Hialeah Cates and approved by the Board of Commissioners; this annexation resulting in the creation of South Miami Beach Municipality. In 1951, when Coral Gables became a city within Miami-Dade County rather than being annexed intoMiami Beach Municipality following resolutions passed by local residents approval referendum - which were not binding - it became clear that there would be need for another county seat in south central FL given then increasing suburban development adjacent to Palm Coast (then unincorporated portion) On November 5th 1959 voters approved creating Sarasota/Manatee Counties Joint Municipal Authority with powers including but not limited to: naming streets after members or leaders from both counties; setting rates for services provided by municipally combined authority; creating planning districts; issuing licenses for businesses within municipality boundaries; establishing parkland usage limits The Joint Municipal Authority continued operation until 1969 when all municipalities amalgamated forming South Miami Beach Municipality effective January 1st 1970 . The municipal name has been changed several times over its history including South Miami Beach City Council & Mayor's Office From 1972 through 1978 it was known as Sarasota–Manatee Counties Convention & Visitors Bureau With approval from then-Mayor Bob Buckhorn we renamed it Tourism Marketing Corporation Incorporating VisitSouthFlorida on July 1st 1979 After 9 years administerred through two different names our present name came about on October 14th 1991 thru an agreement between thenMayor Rick Kriseman and formerCity Manager Donnie Young

Sarasota, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 2,847 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Lee County and home to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. The town's history dates back to 1837 when a group of settlers from New England arrived in what is now Sarasota County. They founded Fort Myers on the current site of downtown Sarasota. After several years of development, Fort Myers was abandoned and its residents moved to what is now Bradenton in 1849. The first post office in Sarasota was established in 1854, and it remained active until 1967 when it merged with nearby Venice. In 1903, a group of Dutchmen settled on land adjacent to present-day downtown Sarasota and erected a wooden building which served as their courthouse until 1907. At that time, the Dutchmen named their new community "Havana." By 1912, Havana had grown sufficiently so that they decided to name their new community after Marie Stopes who lived near them at Spring Lake Lodge (now called Pinellas Park). However, by 1930 Havana had reverted back to its original name: Sarasota. Accordingly, little has changed about the city's culture since its founding except for some alterations made during subsequent waves of immigration including Puerto Ricans; Cuban refugees; Italians; Poles; Canadians; Koreans; Japanese Americans and others who have called Sarasota home over the years. Some classical landmarks still remain such as Spring Lake Lodge where Marie Stopes lived before moving away to be with her husband Louis Pasteur in France during World War 1 Additionally preserved are remnants from early Indian settlement including an earthen mound found near present day Harbor Road which may date back as far as 1795 while also containing evidence of earlier Spanish settlements dating back even further including two cannonballs recovered from Bahia Blanca creek dating back to 1541 AEDT! In total there are more than 20 sites throughout town that offer interesting insights into village life and local history!
