Sarasota (sometimes spelled Sarasota) is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 134,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sarasota County. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico between Miami and Tampa Bay. The history of Sarasota goes back to 1795 when Spanish traders from Havana founded a small settlement on what is now called "Isla de La Palma" about three miles east of present-day downtown Sarasota Harbor. In 1836, Indian traders settled along the bayou that flows through downtown and became known as Seminole Heights because they were occupying land that had been part of the Creek Nation until ceded to Spain in 1802. In 1839, Captain John Jervis arrived in Santa Fe with his squadron of vessels following an American Expedition under Commodore John Cushing which helped drive Mexico out of Cuba and opened up Florida to British exploration and development. Captain Jervis landed at Isla de La Palma bearing news that Spanish traders were trading with Indians there and he named it after Isla de la Palma off Cuba - henceforth known as Isla de la Gracia or "Island of Grace". On July 25, 1840, Captains Fenton Keyes and Henry Biddle acquired US Patent #726 for a natural harbor on Sarasota Bay dating back to 1699 when Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson sailed past it while exploring the area for trade with Spain. A wharf was built at this point by 1795 but no permanent structures were erected until 1800 when French trader Jean Baptiste Bourque came ashore claiming sovereignty over what is now downtown Sarasota Harbour. Sarasota, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 191 at the 2010 census. Sarasota is known for its white sand beaches and Gulf of Mexico views. The first European to visit Sarasota was Juan Ponce de León on October 2,1543 when he landed there with his expedition to explore the area that would become Florida. In 1795, Governor Manuel Key had the old Fort Myers lighthouse built near present-day First Baptist Church in order to warn ships against running into trouble off the coast of Florida. Captain John Smith discovered an island within sight of Sarasota Bay in 1592 while exploring Pensacola Bay and named it Santa Maria de la Palma after his patron saint; however this name did not stuck and it was eventually changed to Sarasota by Spanish residents soon after its discovery. In 1835, Colonel James Moore established a military post called Fort Craig on what is now Second Street near Government Center Boulevard which served as a stop on route from Cuba to Jacksonville. After American forces defeated Seminole Indians at Hialeah Creek Bridge during the Seminole Wars in 1844, General Winfield Scott ordered Moore's men to fortify Second Street so that supplies could be brought upland instead of being transported downriver every week by boatloads like they were then. The fortifications lasted until 1902 when they were abandoned due to funding difficulties caused by World War I; but today part of Third Avenue between Government Center Boulevard and Flagler Drive bears their name still as does part of Fourth Avenue between Government Center Boulevard and US 41 (which forms SR 9). On August 30th 1861 Gov't Act No 511 created Judicial Circuit #8 which included all ofand includingthe cityofPensacola;Providence Plantation northward thereto includingall land lying east thereof toward New Smyrna Beach thence southward unto Indian River; except certain lands lying west thereof belongingto Messrs Jno Wetherspoon & Sons (now defunct) who purchased them from Chas RoebuckTracts extendingnorthwest four miles beyond Indian River creek mouth’ (Facts about this act are summarized here). On December 6th 1865 Constitution granted “City Charter” which empowered Mayor Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Councilmen Amos Kendall II , Hiram Boudinot III & Charles Reddick alongwith other citizens appointed by Mayor for Justice Affairs tenure beginning January 1st 1866 On November 4th 1870 Legislature passed Laws Annotated 1082 creating county seatat Sarasota .
