The Sarasota National Guard was founded on November 5, 1940. The first unit of the Sarasota National Guard was organized on January 1, 1941. The first deployed to active duty in World War II were soldiers from the 90th Infantry Division who served in the European Theater of Operations. The 10th Infantry Battalion also served in Europe during World War II and held its colors at Leningrad Naval Base as part of the Soviet Union's Operation Neptune's Spear. In 1947, Florida Senator John Tower established the Florida National Guard Command to provide support for state military units and to coordinate with other federal military branches. In 1951, a battalion brigade was activated within the Florida National Guard and became known as Brigade Headquarters Company (later brigades). On October 1, 1959, all Brigades were redesignated as divisions which remained in existence until 1972 when they were disbanded and their functions merged into the Florida State Army Reserve Command.

Sarasota, Florida is a city located on the Gulf of Mexico in Sarasota County, Florida. The population was 153,569 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Sarasota County and the second-most populous city within its boundaries after Fort Myers. The first European settlers in Sarasota were Frenchmen who landed at Cape Canaveral Inlet on November 14, 1795. They named their new town Nouvelle Angoulême after their home country of France. The English colonists arriving from England in 1821 called it "Nashville". The area now known as Sarasota was first settled by Seminole Indians who had been living there for centuries before that time. The area was then part of Spanish territory until 1821 when it became part of the United States of America. The first white person to settle here permanently was John Pemberton, who arrived with his family in 1824 and built a cabin on what is now State Road A1A. He named his property Pemberton Key because he owned most of it. In 1840, two brothers by the name of Crouse bought land east of Tampa Bay and founded Camp Crouse about 7 miles (11 km) southeast of present-day downtown Sarasota on what is now State Road 241B (State Road 281). Their camp served as a launching point for boats sailing to Key West and other points along the southwestern coast of Florida during Fourth Of July weekdays when those waters were open to navigation. From this spot they could see alligators swimming near shore and watch waves crashing against shorelines about three miles (4 km) away from where they lived. The Sarasota County courthouse, also known as the Old Courthouse, was built in 1853 and is located on State Road 508 in downtown Sarasota. It served as the county seat from 1853 until 1907. The current courthouse was completed in 1907 and is a two-story, Italianate design with a mansard roof.
