The Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gift items to servicemen and women in the Sarasota area. The first Navy deployment in Sarasota was in 1937 when USS Constitution (CV-4) sailed into town for a training mission. Since then, the Naval Base has sent sailors and Marines on dozens of deployments to various locations around the world. One of the most famous shipments from Naval Base Sarasota was the 1997 Christmas present from President Bill Clinton to Admiral Rickover. The Admiral presented Clinton with a USS Constitution action figure as a token of appreciation for his support during Operation Desert Storm. In recent years, gifts have also been sent out to local residents in memory of fallen military members or those who have contributed to our community through service. For example, in 2016, Mayor Pete Buttigieg sent USS Abraham Lincoln (LHD-5) flagship ship Sadler’s Wells (AGS-8) memorabilia and tributes in commemoration of her time spent deployed aboard HMS Ocean off Oman during Operation SOUTHCOM Eagle early this year. This event was well-attended by locals who were able to get up close and personal with one of America’s newest warships!

The navy deployed gift history in Sarasota, Florida began with the USS Constitution (Navy ship) on Dec. 7, 1941. The USS Constitution was a member of the United States Navy during World War II and served as flagship for U.S. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz during the Pacific Theater of Operations. The USS Constitution was decommissioned on Dec. 14, 1945 and delivered to the Sarasota Naval Shipyard for restoration and recommissioning on Jan. 9, 1946. On Feb 2, 1946, the USS Constitution sailed from Key West bound for Norfolk Virginia where she arrived on Feb 11th after stopovers at Hampton Roads Naval Shipyard in Virginia Beach and Portsmouthrespectively She then proceeded to her destination--the Far East--and arrived at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan on Mar 20th having completed her tour of duty in World War II
Sarasota, Florida is a city located in the U.S. state of Florida on the Gulf Coast of South America. The population was 17,595 at the 2010 census and is the largest city in Sarasota County. It has a maritime history dating back to its founding as an English fishing colony in 1820. The town became an important seaport for shipping goods and passengers between Tampa Bay and Cuba during the 19th century; its later infrastructure helped make it one of Florida's leading economic engines during the 20th century. Today, Sarasota remains a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to both Latin America and Europe. The city proper was first settled by Seminole Indians in what is now downtown Sarasota in 1820 as part of their effort to secure control over key trade routes between Tampa Bay and Cuba. In 1829, Captain John Smith discovered Sarasota harbor while exploring southcentral Florida for Spanish traders looking for new markets for their exports of sugar cane and other products from Havana.Shortly thereafter, British explorer James Cook charted Sarasota Harbor on his third voyage across Cape Canaveral Peninsula on November 5, 1795 while sailing northward along today's mainland coast of Florida bayou: Cook named it Forland Point after Governor Thomas Middleditch (Sir Thomas) Forland, Commander-in-chief Pacific Fleet under Admiral Sir Rodney Butler (15 October 1688 – 24 May 1775), who had participated in Butler's victory at Trafalgar off Gibraltar on 25 October 1685 that ended Spain's attempt to retake Britain’s North American possessions following her defeat at Panama six months earlier. By 1800, much of what is now downtown Sarasota had been built up by local Indian traders who were among early settlers hereabouts; they called their land "Punta de la Cruz" or "Mountain Point". In 1865, Admiral David Dixon Porter sent a shipment of cigarillos (cigarettes) to London as part of his deal with Britain's King George IV. Since World War II, the United States Navy has become increasingly involved in peacekeeping operations around the world. For example, in 1995, USS Harry S Truman deployed supplies and personnel tonode Croatia during Operation Storming Force. Since then, the Truman have transported food and water for troops in Bosnia and Kosovo multiple times. In 2012, USS Dwight D Eisenhower became the first US navy vessel ever to deploy cargo containers onboard an amphibious assault ship while conducting exercises off Japan’s coast. This was part of Operation Sea Horse II which is also known as “Marine Corps Live” due to its focus on Marine infantry units operating ashore under fire conditions aboard amphibious warfare ships

The town initially consisted of only a few homes and was known simply as "Plantation" until 1827 when it became known as "Sarasota". The first formal name given to the town was "Hialeah" after José Hialeah y Valdés, captain general of Cuba's army from 1799-1802. In 1828, Captain John Stroud named the town after General David Barron who served with distinction at Battle Of Pensacola against American forces under Commodore Perry. During this battle, Barron played an important role by leading two cavalry charges that helped turnthe tables on America. Soon afterwards, Barron began construction on what would become known as "Barron's Castle", which still stands today (although it has been greatly renovated). From here he oversaw much development within the community including: building new churches, schools, mills & warehouses; founding post offices; creating roads & bridges; establishes civic institutions such as fire department & library etc.; donating land for parks & gardens etc.; playing an important role in developing Sarasota into one of America's leading cultural centers during its early years."From humble beginnings Plantation quickly grew into one of South Florida's most successful communities," says Mayor Shrivery Trueblood “It wasn't easy – there were many challenges but we overcame them together." Many members of our community shared this sentiment when they testified at City Council meetings about their experiences starting up small businesses or joining forces with others to build something great…. We're grateful for everyone who has participated in our success story over these past 175 years." During World War II, Sarasota joined other local communities across South Florida in helping contribute millions to help support Allied troops fighting overseas. Afterward, business activity slowed down significantly but didn't stop altogether; instead it slowly resumed once again thanks to citizens’ efforts towards revitalization which included things like establishment of libraries/ archives/ museums etc., redevelopment efforts around downtown areas (including Beavercreek), establishment of new parks/gardens etc., initiation into National Register program etcetera A renaissance did occur though following Hurricane Andrew which devastated parts south Floridians throughout late 1990s through 2000s causing significant economic losses totaling $120 million among various sectors statewide however due diligence exercised by residents 2007 marked return to strong levels both economically& recreationally
On November 2, 1907, the town of Sarasota was founded by two men, Russel and Jesse Pearson. The original site of the town was a swamp located on the east side of Sarasota Bay. The area that is now known as Sarasota was first surveyed in 1792 by Captain John Nicholas of HMS Beagle fame
