Sarasota, Florida is a city located in Sarasota County, Florida. The population was 43,569 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Sarasota County and the largest municipality by area. Sarasota, Florida has a rich history that dates back to 1837. The city was founded by the Spanish in what is now Sarasota County, and was named for Fernando de la Vega y Costilla, who served as captain of a squadron sent to explore the Gulf of Mexico. In 1839, Captain Francisco Fernandez y Arellano gave the town its first name, Santa Fe de los Negros. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after his army was defeated by Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. As a result of this event, Sarasota became part of Florida and it remained so until 1959 when it became an independent state. On April 15, 1868, Florida statehood was granted to the United States. The area that now includes Sarasota County was included in the newly formed state. In 1892, a courthouse and jail were built on what is now U.S. 1 in downtown Sarasota. The following year, the first primary school opened in Sarasota with teaching beginning in September 1893. In 1912, the Sarasota-Bradenton Railway was founded and began passenger service between Bradenton and Sarasota; this service ended in 1951. A new station was built at 300 Constitution Boulevard in 1938 and served as the town's main depot for many years until it closed in 1987. In 1941, US1 became State Road 722; State Road 322 (now Bay Drive) designation followed soon afterwards. The modern era of Sarasota County begins with World War II when an armaments plant was developed here by GE Aircraft near New Port Richey; this company later merged with Boeing Company to form Raytheon Corporation (in which GE still has some ownership). More significant development came during the postwar era when federal housing projects were constructed throughout the county - most notably White Sands Missile Range – while other businesses grew up around military facilities such as Naval Air Station New Port Richey and Naval Weapons Station Lake Worth which are still active today. After several decades of relative stagnation during the 1960s through 1980s due to a combination of various factors including high crime rates and a lack of economic opportunities, there has been recent growth both nationally and locally spurred by initiatives like economic development districts (EDDs), job training programs, green infrastructure investments etc.; these trends have continued into recent years with some more pronounced signs of stability through 2018 despite high levels of crime reported statewide
