Sarasota, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,542 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sarasota County and the largest town in Sarasota County. The City of Sarasota currently has a population of over 50,000 people. The first recorded reference to Sarasota comes from an Indian scout named John Stroud who visited the area in 1794. He noted that there were "a number of plantations" around what is now downtown Sarasota and he called it "Hillsborough." In 1824, Henry Plant established a flour mill on the north side of Riverboat Landing between Congress Street and First Avenue. By 1830, other mills had been built in district around present-day downtown Sarasota – most notably on Third Street which became known as "Mallory's Mile". In 1836, Govan Prentice organized a slave trading post near modern-day University Boulevard and Third Street called Fort Prentice. This site later became home to Fort Myers State Park. One account suggests that one local man purchased 60 slaves from Africa for $2 per person while another owned 100 slaves himself! From this point forward until 1865 (when all northern states seceded from the Union), slavery was legal in Florida! A slave market operated on Third Street east of present-day Museum Square during this time period too! In 1840–41 by order of Governor José Félix de la Pena y Gasset Spanish forces burned down part of Broadway bridge connecting Hillsborough with Tampa Bay due to Native American resistance; this event is also sometimes referred to as the arson campaign against whites by Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola... Prior to 1794 no white inhabitant lived within 1 1/2 miles [3 km] south of where Pensacola now stands excepting one or two families living on President's Island... Today only five residences remain on President's Island: three are homes built for trustees who manage President's Island since 1906 and four are replica homes completed in 2006 as part of fund raiser for restoration project.... For many years prior to European settlement there were numerous smaller islands scattered throughoutlets including several inhabited by Coast Salish people who used them as hunting ground and seasonal fishing spot.(1) After purchase by Spain from the Tequestes(2) presidente[s] Juan Manuel Morán sent out dromedaries (water buffalo) into bay search for new land but no evidence exists that these animals crossed into Florida... An early map prepared about 1800 showed nothing more than small coves and bays surrounding present day downtown SarasOTA however… development proceeded apace based upon reports received about rich phosphate deposits discovered at Hillsborough Bluff northeast cornerof Biscayne Bay.(3) By 1825 wealthy storeman James Robertson had leased 2 lots west sideof current Main street & began building brick buildings using limestone taken from hills just eastof river landing & quarried near Present day GateHouse Park... Completed brick buildings can be seen today along 3rd St.. west sideof main street acrossfrom park.....Robertson started importing goods such as lumber, livestock etc., primarily from Liverpool but soon began exporting items such as bricks,...the town prospered rapidly becoming home to some 20+ businesses starting with 12ths Store then 4thsStore before Bank closed down....... reopened under name “Porto Rico” Dec 5th1827......Afternoon high water caused Bridge over Intracoastal Waterway above mouth Of River To Be Closed so Ferry could not enter & Ferrymen Could Not Reach Town............ On March 3rd 1828 store opened again under new name “Sarasota”after owner obtained Permit From Govt To Use Bridge Above Mouth Of River
The first Europeans to visit Sarasota, Florida were the Spanish in 1795. The first European settler in this area was José de la Cruz who founded a trading post on the Manatee River in 1819. By 1830, there were over sixty European families living in this area. In 1841, Captain John Sledge and his expedition explored and charted the coast of Florida and named it after himself, John Sebastian Sledge. The town of Sarasota was founded on December 12th, 1851 by JB White as a result of land speculation around that time. On January 1st, 1893, Congress passed an act which designated Sarasota County as the county seat for Sarasota City and all other municipalities within its limits. This made Sarasota an official city status with a mayor-council form of government with voting rights!
