Roosevelt sent a message to Congress authorizing the purchase of three Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses from American Airlines as part of the newly created National Defense Reserve Fleet. The bombers were used for aerial reconnaissance and bombing support during World War II and are still in service today.
Satellite Beach is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood metropolitan area. Satellite Beach is located on State Road A1A, about 12 miles east of Fort Lauderdale and 9 miles west of Hollywood. The town was founded in 1907 by Fannie French and W. Halsey Smith as a seaside resort for white vacationers and their families who could not afford to live in either Miami or West Palm Beach. The first post office opened in 1911. One highlight of the early years was World's Fair participation in 1904 when nearly two hundred businesses were exhibitors from twenty-six countries; many became famous after that year: such as Singer Sewing Machines (now known as Saks Fifth Avenue), Japanned Rubber Products, Continental Can Company, Sunbeam Radio Corporation (now GE) and American Tobacco Company among others. In 1960, Satellite Beach annexed neighboring unincorporated areas of Deerfield Beach to form a new municipality with a population of 3,813 residents. In 1984, Satellite beach annexed another unincorporated area - Carters Pass - which had been adjacent to its southern border since 1916 when it was created as an agricultural reserve by then- Governors Clements and Lawton following annexation of nearby Plantation Heights subdivision by that community Today much has changed during the last sixty years – satellite dish technology now dominates terrestrial video providers throughout most satellite towns across America – but one thing has not: growth potential stemming from land use considerations unique to this tiny corner of South Florida According to the 2000 Census,[7] there were 1,661 people living in Satellite Beach vacating other parts of Broward County for reasons including " relocation due to job offers or family moves". Satellite Beach is a small town located on the shore of Jupiter Inlet in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It was founded by white settlers in 1851 as an agricultural community known as Sun City. The name was changed to Satellite Beach in honor of General Hugh A. Satellite who fought with American forces during World War II. As the population increased and the town began to develop commercial interests, it adopted its present name in 1957. Satellite Beach is located on Fortunato Key, which is named after Rear Admiral John L. Fortunato who served as Commandant of Marines at NAS Jacksonville from 1951-1957 and also served as Superintendent of Schools for Brevard County from 1955-1959. As part ofBrevard County's Comprehensive Plan for Regional Development, which was unveiled in 1960, satellite beach was designated a "rustic oceanfront resort" which would offer a variety of vacation experiences including golfing, fishing, swimming and sunbathing along with other services such as grocery stores and hospitals within walking distance. The first phase of this plan called for the development of a shopping mall that would include a variety of restaurants and stores catering to both local residents and tourists from Jacksonville and Miami. However, upon completion the mall never materialized due to economic reasons combined with competition from more popular shopping areas within Brevard County such as Miramar Boulevard or downtown Daytona Beach). In 1976 satellite beach underwent renovations designed by architects Gordon Bunnell & Associates LLP that included the addition of new architecture that reflected then current trends for oceanfront resorts alongFlorida's Gulf coast This new design featured open-air dining areas that overlooked Jupiter Inlet while providing unobstructed views into Jupiter Bay Additionally, all public areas were re-landscaped using natural materials such as cedar trees instead of artificial materials such as plastic lawns or cement walkways The results were highly successful with tourists coming back year after year despite competition from much larger resorts nearby In 1984 another renovation project occurred which again features open air dining areas overlooking Jupiter bay but this time with much stricter guidelines regarding landscaping including only use natural materials if available Although not widely publicized at the time it involved extensive replacement/ reconstructionof almost all interior building surfaces within satellite beach limits plus installationof state-of-the art mechanical systems ensuring efficient operation even during extremely high tide levels The late 1990s saw some significant changes when Mayor Larry Gomes purchased land adjacent to his home that constituted what is now known as Gomes Park . This area became home to many controversial activities such as music festivals (such as Ribfest) throughout summer months while also serving dual functions - hosting social events for school groups during winter months while also accommodating locals who desired privacy ) During this time period satellite beach experienced rapid growth becoming one ofBrevard County's most popular tourist destinations .
