Satellite Beach, Florida is a small town in the panhandle of Florida that has been inhabited by military personnel for centuries. The town's history can be traced back to World War 1 when the United States Military Base at Satellite Beach was erected. The base was later renamed Camp Whitehead and served as a training ground for American troops during World War 2. After the war, Camp Whitehead was used as an airbase by the USAF during the cold war. In 1966, Camp Whitehead became part of Fort Walton Beach Army Base and eventually became Satellite Beach Army Depot. Today, satellite beach army depot is home to over 350 active duty military members and their families who are responsible for providing essential services to the community. One of the most significant moments in Satellite Beach's history occurred on July 8th, 1946 when General Douglas MacArthur (Ulysses S. Grant) disembarked his USS Missouri at Naval Station Jacksonville and walked down Main Street to Union Chapel where he delivered his famous speech "The United States of America" which markedthe end of World War II. From here on out, Satellite Beach would play an important role in American culture through its military presence. Today, there are many different ways that militaries have contributed to Satellite Beach's culture including donating land or buildings for use by local businesses or organizations; playing host to annual events such as Republican National Convention or Fourth Of July fireworks displays; or hosting visiting units during visits from other countries or militaries around the world. Some examples include: hosting US Marines stationed at NAS Jacksonville; hosting US Forces Africa during Operation African Queen; welcoming Germany's Wehrmacht after they liberated Paris in 1944; and welcoming Japan's Imperial Japanese Army after their surrender in 1945. The first American troops arrived in 1898 and the USArmy Satellite Beach garrison was activated on December 12, 1941. The 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment (United States Infantry) of the 8th Infantry Division was initially stationed here before being redeployed to Fort Polk, Louisiana. The 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment (United States Infantry) deployed here again in 1945 as part of Operation Overlord which led to World War II. The battalion remained continuously active until it disbanded on September 15, 1946. On December 2, 1965 a detachment of the 7th Cavalry Brigade was sent here by order of General William Westmoreland to participate in Operation Restormand which resulted in the May 1968 Cambodian coup d'état. In 1992 a detachment from Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego's 3rd Squadron Landing Team deployed here under Marine Forces Reserve Command's component command support role during Desert Storm/Operation Restore Hope following Gulf War I; operations that destroyed Iraqi military capability and ended Iraq's occupation of Kuwait.
