The town was founded in 1903 by two men who were looking for a place to build their own summer home. The two men had been married earlier that year and were looking for a more permanent home to raise their family. They found what they were looking for when they came across an undeveloped beach on the mainland which they purchased from the government for $5 per acre. The town quickly became popular because it had good access to water resources and excellent fishing opportunities. Fishing tournaments are held every year in memory of those who have passed away in the town, including Mayor John Darnell's father, Capts Fenton Jandreau and Harry Stepney. In 1978, Satellite Beach established itself as one of America's first satellite towns when it was chosen as one of nineteen towns nationwide to be featured in "America's 100 Best Places To Live". In 1893, Italian entrepreneur Giovanni Fumo founded La Tazzera (The Coffee House), which became one of the most famous tourist destinations in Italy for its gourmet coffee. Today, La Tazzera continues to be an important center for Italian caffeine culture with its wide variety of roasts and flavors.

The town developed on the coastline of Gulf Breeze Bay and was named after Earth's first satellite, called "Sattler" by German scientists in 1924. Satellite Beach is located along US-1 andSR-2A ( intersecting US-1), about 12 miles east of Naples and 9 miles north of Fort Myers. The town began as a sandbank at the mouth of Gulf Breeze Bay. By 1892, there were only 10 people living in Satellite Beach. In 1902, Cushman Bros., merchants from Naples, opened a store in Satellite Beach and started developing trade with the surrounding villages. By 1915, there were 50 people living in Satellite Beach and it had become an important commercial center for the area. In 1926, Earth's first artificial satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral National Seashore by United States Naval Magnetic Laboratory Deputy Director Rear Admiral Halsey Bullock III aboard USS Triton under Project Sattler which was part of NACA's Mariner program.. On July 25th 1928 United States Navy Commander Perry Liddell launched Explorer I with American Radio Corporation transponder No. 3D which became operational on July 28th 1928 providing advanced world mapping information to Naval Forces Europe headquartered at UK Royal Air Force Station Wyndham Hall England while orbiting 435 miles above Earth...On December 8th 1929 Explorer II passed over Tampa Bay transmitting back data weighing 521 Kilograms including pictures taken by instruments onboard…This added new dimensions to our knowledge of our planet through space." - From "Satellite Beach: A History" written by Gail Jansen
Satellite Beach was first settled in the early 1800s by Spanish colonists. The original name of the beach was "Fajardo". In 1847, a group of English sailors named themselves the Satellite Beach Club and set up shop on the beach. The club lasted for several years before disbanding. In 1915, an oil well was drilled off Satellite Beach and production began in 1916. The Original Starrett Corporation built a steel plant onthe beach in 1922 and produced cast iron products until its bankruptcy in 1985. The end of World War II led to a growth in industry at Satellite Beach as war-time jobs were available. In 1945, Moretti Bros., grocery stores, became operational on Satellite Boulevard adjacent to the steel plant.. By 1957 there were 10 businesses operating on satellite Boulevard with an payroll of $8 million. In 1961, the town annexed land east of Satellite Boulevard which created new business districts including Sunrise Plaza Shopping Center and Gulliver's Landing Marina. A year later, construction began on what is now known as Holiday Inn Express & Suites by Marriott at Sunrise Plaza Shopping Center. This project cost $330 million and completed in 1984; it remains one of the largest hotels ever built in Florida outside Walt Disney World Resort Orlando or Miami International Airport airport complex expansions (such as Miami Marlins Stadium). In 1969, satellite Boulevard was renamed Ocean Drive after General Electric’s purchase of Wernher von Braun’s company manufacturer/constructor thereof for use during Apollo 11 manned spaceflight program research project - this event also marked beginning formal annexation process that would lead to establishment of municipality which included much development along ocean drive corridor over ensuing decades culminating with present day community appellation
