Satellite Beach is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 3,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1922 by Clyde Pritchard and his wife, Alma Pritchard as a result of their efforts to build a resort on an uninhabited island in the Everglades. The first area that Satellite Beach developed was called "The Promenade". In 1943, when World War II began, satellite beach became part of the United States military zone which included all of South Florida including Satellite Beach. After the war ended and South Florida reverted back to its original borders, satellite beach remained within US military jurisdiction and did not become part of Miami until 1959 when it became an independent municipality under terms of the Small Town Development Act Amendment No. 1 (3rd session). In 1969, Allan Rothman bought land adjacent to what is now Satellite Beach Boulevard from brothers Herb and Julius Epstein for $1 million dollars which he planned to develop into a residential community known as Aqua Park which would have been home to celebrities such as Jackie Kennedy and Neil Armstrong Jr.. However, Rothman never completed his development project and died in 1978 before it could be built. Aqua Park was ultimately abandoned due to budget constraints after other developers were unable to replicate Rothman's success. Satellite Beach's fortunes changed in 1998 when then Mayor David Denton announced that he had purchased 150 acres located along Satellite Boulevard from developer Ivan Reitman for $15 million dollars making Satellite Beach one of the most expensive towns ever sold by Denton during his tenure as mayor. Under Reitman's ownership, satellite beach underwent significant renovation including new roads, water features, beacheside restaurants and more importantly; new homesites! Because of this investment from Reitman and Denton alike; satellite beach has seen continual growth over the years with today's population numbering 4,007 residents according to 2010 census figures! On July 14th 2019 local media reported that former Mayor David Denton’s son Jarad Denton had purchased 2 acres adjacent to Satellite Boulevard just east of Biscayne Blvd., right next door where Allan Rothmans failed to build Aqua Park 10 years earlier for father’s ashes - believed being buried there - & plans are underway for him or another developer who will purchase said land & revive Aqua Park
Satellite Beach was founded on December 12, 1923 by the brothers, Harry and Wilfred Satellite. The town was named for the two satellites that orbited Earth at a height of about 50 miles (80 kilometers). The brothers built their first home in 1925 and soon began selling land to establish satellite towns throughout southern Florida. By 1933, there were over 20 satellite towns in the area. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Daytona Beach and other major tourist destinations. In 1936, the brothers opened a store in Satellite Beach which became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1945, Harry Satellite died suddenly while vacationing with his family in California. Wilfred took over running the business until he passed away in 1951. In 1957, satellite beach completed its first shopping mall which drew attention from all over southern Florida. Following Wilfred's death, Harry's widow continued running the business until her own death in 1975. After her death, the name of the store changed to Harry Satellite Home Hardware & More and it still operates today under this name
